From Whalefall to Heart of The Beast: 7 Survival Films of 2026 to Watch

A plane crash, a deadly wilderness, a deep-sea nightmare or a mission to save humanity: survival takes many forms on screen. In 2026, filmmakers are pushing the genre to extraordinary extremes, trapping characters in situations where every breath counts, every decision could be their last, and survival is as much a battle of the mind as it is of the body. From Austin Abrams fighting his way out of a whale to Brad Pitt navigating the unforgiving Alaskan wilderness, here are recent survival films that put human endurance to the ultimate test.

Whalefall

Trapped inside a whale with just an hour of oxygen, survival becomes as much an emotional journey as a fight against the odds.

Survival

Austin Abrams stars as Jay Gardiner, a young diver who is swallowed by a giant sperm whale while searching for his late father’s remains. With just an hour of oxygen, Jay must battle a terrifying underwater ordeal, drawing on the survival lessons his father taught him. Directed by Brian Duffield and based on Daniel Kraus’s bestselling novel, Whalefall transforms its wildly original premise into a gripping survival thriller with an emotional core, exploring grief, forgiveness and the complicated bond between a father and son. Also starring Josh Brolin, the film is a visceral, edge-of-your-seat cinematic experience that delivers both suspense and heart. Whalefall is now playing in Indian theatres.

Heart of the Beast

Brad Pitt takes on the Alaskan wilderness in a fight for survival with his four-legged companion.

Survival

Survival becomes a test of endurance and loyalty in this action thriller starring Brad Pitt as James Belmont, a retired Special Forces veteran. When his seaplane crashes in the Alaskan wilderness, Belmont must embark on a gruelling 58-mile trek to safety with his traumatised combat German Shepherd. Battling the elements and the unforgiving terrain, the duo must rely on their instincts and their bond to make it out alive. Directed by David Ayer, who reunites with Pitt for the first time since Fury, the film also features J.K. Simmons.

Send Help

When your worst nightmare is your boss, being stranded on a deserted island takes things to another level.

Survival Films
Directed by Sam Raimi, this survival thriller brings a deliciously dark twist to the genre. Rachel McAdams plays an overlooked office employee who finds herself stranded on a deserted island with her insufferable boss, played by Dylan O’Brien, after a plane crash leaves them as the only survivors. With no help in sight, the unlikely duo must work together to stay alive. But as their circumstances grow more desperate, workplace hierarchies begin to crumble, loyalties are tested, and the balance of power takes some unexpected turns. Expect a heady mix of black humour, psychological warfare and nail-biting tension.

Apex

In the Australian wilderness, the line between hunter and hunted is dangerously thin.

Survival Films
Charlize Theron stars as Sasha, a grieving rock climber who heads into the Australian wilderness seeking solitude, only to find herself fighting for her life. Taron Egerton plays a local hunter who gives her a head start before turning the landscape into a deadly hunting ground. What begins as an escape into nature quickly becomes a brutal game of survival, where every decision matters and the terrain offers little refuge. Directed by Baltasar Kormákur, whose credits include Everest and Adrift, this 95-minute thriller promises a relentless chase through some unforgiving terrain.

The Devil’s Mouth

A graduation trip turns into an underwater nightmare in this shark-infested thriller.

Survival Films
Five friends travel to Thailand to celebrate their graduation, but their adventure takes a terrifying turn when they explore an underwater cave system and discover that a bull shark is hunting them. With dwindling air supplies, a labyrinth of submerged passages and old tensions bubbling to the surface, the group must find a way out before time runs out. Starring Kathryn Newton and Lana Condor, this PG-13 thriller combines the claustrophobia of underwater survival with the familiar terror of being hunted by a relentless predator.

Resident Evil

One routine delivery. One deadly outbreak. One night to survive.

Survival

Director Zach Cregger, known for Barbarian and Weapons, brings a new vision to the Resident Evil franchise, returning to the series’ survival-horror roots. Austin Abrams stars as Bryan, a medical courier whose seemingly ordinary delivery plunges him into a night of escalating terror as a mysterious outbreak engulfs his surroundings. With danger closing in and chaos spreading, an ordinary man finds himself fighting extraordinary odds. Expect relentless tension, grotesque horrors and a desperate race to survive.

Project Hail Mary

When humanity’s future rests on one astronaut, failure is not an option.

Survival Films
Ryan Gosling stars as Ryland Grace, a lone astronaut who wakes aboard a mysterious spaceship with no memory of who he is or why he is there. As fragments of his memory return, Grace discovers that he has been sent on a mission to solve a cosmic mystery that threatens the survival of life on Earth. What follows is a race against time that combines scientific ingenuity, isolation and the extraordinary resilience of the human spirit. Directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller and adapted from Andy Weir’s bestselling novel, the film proved a major theatrical draw in India.

Exclusive: Rajesh Tailang on Bakaiti 2 Changing Ideas of Fatherhood and More

With Bakaiti 2 out, Rajesh Tailang returns to a family drama that finds its humour and conflict in the everyday lives of a middle-class household. As Sanjay Kataria, he plays a father whose sense of responsibility often comes with an instinct to keep his vulnerabilities hidden. The character also offers an interesting contrast to Tailang’s own experience of fatherhood.
In this conversation with Filmfare, the actor discusses the nuances of playing Sanjay, his long-standing working relationship with co-star Sheeba Chaddha, and why stories centred on families continue to find an audience. He also reflects on the changes he has witnessed in the film industry over the years and discusses taking the Mirzapur universe to the big screen.
What did you personally relate to about the Kataria family? How similar or different are you from Sanjay?
When you read the script or watch the show, you feel that everyone is a part of your family. If not your family, you’ll find someone like them in your neighbourhood. That makes the show very relatable, and it was a lot of fun to work on. At the same time, there is emotion and nuance to the story. I have a lot in common with Sanjay, but there are differences, too. I’m not like him in many ways. I’m more of a friend to my child than Sanjay is to his.
Rajesh Tailang
One of the things explored this season is Sanjay’s tendency to see himself as the patriarch of the family. He doesn’t want to share his vulnerabilities because he feels it might diminish him. This season, he realises that expressing emotions is not a weakness; it can actually be a strength. Personally, I don’t think that way. I’m quite comfortable being vulnerable at home.
Do you think the idea of fatherhood has changed across generations?

Yes. I see it changing with every generation, and children are changing, too. They are more vocal and quick to point out hypocrisy. But my father was also a friend to me. I’m giving my son what I received from my father. He treated me the way I try to treat my son. However, I’ve seen that this wasn’t the case in many families, and I can see things changing.
How has your working relationship with Sheeba Chaddha evolved?
We’ve been working together for almost 10 years. We’ve explored different kinds of characters and played husband and wife in three different series. I know her both as a person and as an artist. There are many things we don’t need to say to each other.
At the same time, exploring something new is exciting and unpredictable, especially when you’re working with a good actor like Sheeba. You never know exactly how she will approach a scene, and she doesn’t have to approach it the same way she did something earlier. That freshness is important. It’s not good for an actor to become too predictable. We try to keep exploring the dynamics of interpersonal relationships.
Rajesh Tailang
Do you think OTT has created more room for stories like Bakaiti, which focus on ordinary middle-class families and their everyday experiences?
Definitely. When OTT platforms first started becoming popular, there were shows that were very over the top. There were also violent shows and crime thrillers, some of which I have worked on myself.
Earlier, OTT was more of an individual viewing experience. You would watch a show on your own. But with easier access to the internet and the growing presence of smart TVs in our homes, OTT has also become a family viewing experience. The content has changed as a result. Shows like Bakaiti have found space because people can watch them together as a family.

You’ve witnessed the industry evolve from television and films to OTT. As an actor, what is the biggest change you’ve experienced since you started out?

I started with Shanti – Ek Ghar Ki Kahani (1994), which was one of the first daily soaps on Indian television. In the early days, I also worked on a few films with people such as Govind Nihalani and Ketan Mehta. Films were still being shot on celluloid then, which made for a very different experience.

There was always the concern of wasting footage, so things were more carefully planned. You couldn’t keep doing the same shot over and over again. With digital filmmaking, you can shoot from different angles and repeat takes more easily. That has made things more comfortable for actors. Earlier, you had to get the shot right quickly. There would be more rehearsals but fewer final takes. Now, there may be fewer rehearsals and more takes.
Another major change is the length of shooting shifts. Earlier, shifts were generally eight hours long; now, they can stretch to 12 hours. There are also advantages to the industry becoming more corporate. Many processes are better streamlined, sets are more professional, and things have improved in terms of scheduling and payments. Women’s participation in the overall filmmaking process has also increased significantly.
Your recent film, Mirzapur: The Movie, also became a hit. When you began working on it, did you anticipate this response?

Everyone was nervous because it was the first experiment of its kind. No series had previously been adapted into a film in this way. There were positives and negatives to consider. On the one hand, audiences already knew the characters and the world, which was an advantage. On the other hand, they might wonder what was new about it.
Everyone was a little apprehensive, but I think the approach was to make something honestly and then see what happened. We all tried to remain honest to our characters.
