Brother starring Jayam Ravi is making its way to the big screens this year for Diwali as it releases on October 31, 2024. The movie showcases the life of Karthik, a law college dropout who stands against any sort of injustice and questions anyone over it.
Fed up with his antics, his elder sister takes him to her in-laws’ house to change him. The rest of the film focuses on whether the man changes in his ways and reforms as everyone wishes. Aside from Jayam Ravi, the movie also has actors like Priyanka Mohan, Bhumika Chawla, Saranya Ponvannan, Seetha, Natarajan Subramaniam, Achyuth Kumar, Rao Ramesh, and more in key roles.
The Plot:
Brother starring Jayam Ravi in the lead focuses on the life of a young man called Karthik. From an early age of his life, the man questions anything and everything that happens around him, striving for justice. Keeping his character in mind, the man is even enrolled to study as a lawyer but is also made to drop out of there due to his nature.
As life goes on, Karthik continues to live his carefree life by questioning every injustice, living with his mother and father in Chennai. However, one of his antics causes his father to suffer a heart attack which forces his elder sister to take him to her in-laws’ house where he could be reformed.
With Karthik yet again creating various problems in his sister’s house, things take a wild turn which sets up the rest of the movie. If you’re planning to watch the Jayam Ravi starrer in theaters, here’s the Pinkvilla review to help you decide whether to watch it in theaters or not.
The Good:
The movie Brother starring Jayam Ravi is a caricaturish tale of comedy and drama that goes on inside a family. As the actor plays the role of a carefree adult, not thinking about his actions, it shines through him which offers a sense of solace in its experience.
The movie’s storyline offers something breezy and fun to watch which makes us chuckle at a few points here and there. Moreover, the film takes place in the picturesque landscapes of Ooty in the Nilgiris. The serenity of the hill station offers a mindful escape in terms of visuals.
Coming to the technical side of the film, the movie has one of the best Harris Jayraj compositions that can be listened to in recent times. The composer’s songs which include a love track and a wedding song stood out as reminiscent of his formative years despite having an underwhelming impact in terms of choreography.
The Bad:
The Jayam Ravi starrer flick suffers deeply from an outdated script which is coupled with an age-old narration. The old-school style of adapting a simple story like this would have been a hit in the 1990s or early 2000s of Tamil cinema but the same would only feel like a travesty in today’s day and age.
Neither understanding the essence of adding nostalgia nor understanding the prominence of pop culture references, the movie takes a hit in its execution which makes us wonder why we are even watching this. Despite some minor chuckles here and there, the film does not pack anything in terms of humor and the melodrama that goes along with it once again falls short of connecting anywhere.
From a writing pov, the movie does not offer any significant reason for a character arc nor does the one provided hit you to the core for an emotional response, feeling as if a child wrote it. To easily sum up the writing of the film, it would be best to term it “uncreative” or simply, “cringe.”
Additionally, none of the characters are explored organically along with a love angle that spurts out of nowhere without any cause or action.
The Performance:
Jayam Ravi, Priyanka Arul Mohan, and Bhumika Chawla are the leading actors in the movie playing key roles, but out of the 3 only Bhumika offered some grounds for her portrayal. While Jayam Ravi breezed through the same as with any comedy films he’s done before, Priyanka yet again became a scarecrow that just appeared in and out of the frame, for whatever reason.
Rao Ramesh in his egotistical supporting character and MS Bhaskar giving us a small cameo appearance, it would be fair to say that they were saving graces in a sinking ship.

The Verdict:
Brother is just another formulaic comedy movie that does not offer much from an entertainment factor. If you want a Diwali movie that offers some minute laughs along with your family, then go ahead. Otherwise, it’s better to avoid the same.
