The shocking rape-murder of a young doctor in Kolkata that has hit the country hard, has been taken up by the Supreme Court. A three-judge bench led by Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud will hear the matter today.

The case – being investigated by the CBI — has thrown up multiple issues including sanctity of evidence, rule of law, safety of healthcare professionals and the big picture issue of women’s security in the workplace. It has also put the ruling Trinamool Congress under pressure, with women – the staunch constituency of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee – being up in arms.

“Worried About Safety Of Women, Young Doctors”: Top Court On Kolkata Horror

The Supreme Court said that it has taken suo motu cognisance as the Kolkata rape-murder case raises “systematic issues regarding the safety of doctors across India”. 
The bench headed by the Chief Justice said it is “deeply concerned” about the absence of safe working conditions for young doctors.
“If women are not able to go to work and conditions are not safe, we are denying them equality,” the top court said.
The Supreme Court also said that it is “deeply concerned” with the fact that the name of the victim has been all over the media, and the photographs and videos are all over the media. “This is extremely concerning,” the court said.
“Most young doctors putting in 36 hours, we must evolve national protocol to ensure safe work conditions,” the court said.

The body of the postgraduate trainee doctor was found in the seminar hall of the state-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata on August 9, triggering nationwide protests. A civic volunteer has been arrested in connection with the crime.

“Will Set Up National Task Force Of Doctors On Hospital Safety”: Chief Justice

The Supreme Court has said it will form a national task force to ensure safety of doctors as it heard arguments in the case over rape and murder of a doctor at a Kolkata hospital. A bench led by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud also blasted the West Bengal government and the hospital administration for delaying the filing of the FIR (first information report).

The Supreme Court had on Sunday taken suo motu cognizance of the matter that has shaken the country.
