Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has pledged to step down if anyone who hasn’t applied for the NRC is given citizenship under the CAA. Protests against the CAA are ongoing in Assam, with concerns about potential population influx. Effigies of PM Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah have been burned in protest. Sarma assures that those who arrived after 2014 won’t be granted citizenship and expects minimal applicants.

The applicants can also submit any of 20 documents like copy of visa and immigration stamp on arrival in India, certificate issued by an elected member of any rural or urban body or a revenue officer to prove that he or she has entered India on or before December 31, 2014
