A bus driver lost control and rammed several other vehicles on its way in Mumbai’s Kurla (West) last night, resulting in the death of at least six persons. A video capturing the moments before the horrific crash has now emerged. The electric bus whizzed past several shops as it brushed vehicles parked on the roadside, sparking chaos on the streets, showed the video. The accident occurred around 9:45 pm.

Brihanmumbai Electricity Supply and Transport (BEST) undertaking, the public transport provider in Mumbai, said Sanjay More, driver of the bus, had lost control near the Kurla (West) market – on its way from the Kurla Railway Station (West) towards Sakinaka.

The bus – running on route number 332 – accelerated uncontrollably and hit about two dozen vehicles on the way, including auto-rickshaws, two-wheelers, and a police jeep. An official said the bus then rammed into the gates of an apartment.

The victims have been identified as Kannis Ansari, 55, Afreen Shah, 19, Anam Shaikh, 20, Shivam Kashyap, 18, Vijay Gaikwad, 70, Faruq Chaudhari, 54.

Besides six casualties, at least 49 others were injured in the accident. At least four police personnel were among those injured, said a doctor at the Seven Hills Hospital.

Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has announced Rs 5 lakh financial assistance for the family of each victim. The BEST will take care of the treatment of those injured, he said.

The driver of the public bus has been arrested and charged with culpable homicide. Police sources suggest he did not have much experience of driving heavy vehicles. The cops have yet to conduct his blood test to check if he was drunk during the accident.

The bus – which officials say had been in service for just three months – will also be checked for technical faults.

The Olectra bus is registered in the name of a company called EVEY Trans and has been taken on a wet lease by the BEST. An official said the drivers of such buses are supplied by the private operators.

According to an eyewitness, the bus swerved over a stretch of 200 metres before the crash. Zaid Ahmed, who lives nearby, said he ran to the spot hearing a loud noise, and saw the bus had hit pedestrians.

Abu Mohammed al-Jolani aka Ahmed al-Sharaa, the Syrian rebel leader who led the lightning offensive that put an end to Bashar al-Assad’s rule, has said the new dispensation would go after senior officials responsible for torture and abuses under the previous regime.

Sharaa met outgoing prime minister Mohammed al-Jalali “to coordinate a transfer of power that guarantees the provision of services” to Syria’s people, a statement posted on the rebels’ Telegram channels said.

The statement added that the new government “will not hesitate to hold accountable the criminals, murderers, security and army officers involved in torturing the Syrian people”.

The movement against the Bashar al-Assad regime began in 2011, but he cracked down hard, killing about half a million people and forcing many more to flee the country. With support from allies Russia and Iran, Assad managed to stave off any rebel offensive for over a decade. But with his allies occupied in wars in Ukraine and Gaza, Assad was exposed and the rebels did not miss the opportunity. As the rebel tanks rolled into Damascus, Assad fled Syria and curtains came down on the five-decade rule of his clan.

The regime change in Syria came as a rebirth for the thousands of inmates in Syria’s prisons and detention centres, many of them jailed for dissent.

According to news agency AFP, thousands gathered outside Saydnaya prison near Damascus, synonymous with the worst atrocities of Assad’s rule, to look for their relatives.

Over 1 lakh inmates are believed to have died — including executions and natural deaths — in Syrian prisons during the Assad rule, according to a 2021 report by the UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights. Of them, more than 30,000 died in Saydnaya alone. An Amnesty International investigation found that “murder, torture, enforced disappearances and extermination carried out at Saydnaya since 2011 have been perpetrated as part of an attack against the civilian population that has been widespread, as well as systematic, and carried out in furtherance of state policy”. Such were the tales of torture in Saydnaya that it was known as a “human slaughterhouse”.

With Assad gone, the family members of these inmates, many of whom have been detained for years, are looking for them. Among them is Aida Taha, 65, who is looking for her brother, arrested in 2012. “I ran like crazy. But I found out that some prisoners were still in the basements. There are three or four floors underground,” she told AFP.

Many of the prisoners who have managed to escape from the now-unmanned prisons roam the streets of Damascus, with unmistakable signs of torture and hunger.

A civil servant at the finance ministry said people were scared to speak out. “It’s indescribable. We never thought this nightmare would end. We are reborn. We were afraid to speak for 55 years, even at home. We used to say the walls had ears,” Rim Ramadan, 49, told AFP.

Syria’s parliament, earlier pro-Assad, has said it supports “the will of the people to build a new Syria towards a better future governed by law and justice”. Baath party has said it will support “a transitional phase in Syria aimed at defending the unity of the country.”

Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, which led the rebel groups’ blitzkrieg, was earlier banned by Western powers for its links with Al-Qaeda. Over the years, the organisation has tried to soften its image.

As Syria looks to rebuild, Germany and France have said they were ready to cooperate with the new leadership “on the basis of fundamental human rights and the protection of ethnic and religious minorities”. British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has said HTS must reject “terrorism and violence” before Britain can engage with it. US State Secretary Antony Blinken Washington DC is determined to prevent IS re-establishing safe havens in Syria. “We have a clear interest in doing what we can to avoid the fragmentation of Syria, mass migrations from Syria and, of course, the export of terrorism and extremism,” he said.

The UN has said the Assad regime must be held to account. The ousted leader has reportedly fled to Russia, but Kremlin has not confirmed this.

Padma Vibhushan SM Krishna served in several top positions at the Centre and the state level, including Governor, External Affairs Minister and Chief Minister, in a political career that spanned half a century. But before his deep dive into domestic politics, he played a key role in a US election as a law student there. And was appreciated by none other than charismatic US President John F Kennedy.

In 1960, Democratic leader Kennedy was running for President. Mr Krishna, then a 28-year-old law student in the US, wrote to Mr Kennedy and offered to campaign for him in areas dominated by Indian Americans. The next year, Mr Kennedy was elected President and did not forget the contribution of the young Indian student.

In a letter dated January 19, 1961, Mr Kennedy wrote to Mr Krishna, “I hope that these few lines will convey my warm appreciation for your efforts during the campaign. I am most grateful for the splendid enthusiasm of my associates. I am only sorry I have not been able to personally thank you for the excellent work which you performed in behalf of the Democratic ticket.

“Without your unrelenting efforts and loyalty, victory would not have been possible last November 8th,” Mr Kennedy wrote, two years before he was assassinated in one of the most shocking events in world history.

Mr Krishna, who had been ailing for some time, died at his Bengaluru home this morning. He is survived by his wife Prema and daughters Shambhavi and Malavika.

After finishing his education at the George Washington University Law School, Mr Krishna returned to India. His long political journey started in 1962 when he won the Maddur Assembly seat in Karnataka as an Independent candidate. He was with the Praja Socialist Party before joining the Congress.

Over the next five decades, he served as Karnataka Chief Minister, Maharashtra Governor, External Affairs Minister and Assembly Speaker. His term as Karnataka Chief Minister from October 1999 to May 2004 is credited with changing the face of Bengaluru and starting its transformation into an IT hub. After a five-decade journey with the Congress, Mr Krishna joined the BJP in 2017 before eventually retiring from politics in 2023, citing his advanced age and health issues.
