Protests refuse to die down in Bangladesh. The country’s Chief Justice, seen as a loyalist of former prime minister Sheikh Hasina, was forced to resign this afternoon after an ultimatum from protesting students. An interim government is already in place in Bangladesh where clashes during a quota protest claimed at least 400 lives earlier this week and forced Ms Hasina to resign and flee the country.
Hundreds of Bangladeshi Hindus protested in Dhaka against violence targeting their community following Sheikh Hasina’s exit as prime minister on August 5. They urged for safety measures, a minority protection commission, and legislative action. Protesters criticized civil society’s inaction and called for parliamentary seat reservations for minorities, expressing concerns to interim leader Muhammad Yunus.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Kerala to interact with Wayanad landslide survivors and inspect relief efforts. He was accompanied by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and Governor Arif Mohammed Khan. The death toll rose above 400 with 150 missing. The state requested Rs 2,000 crore from the Centre for reconstruction and rehabilitation assistance.
