Jennifer Lopez And Jharrel Jerome’s Unstoppable Receives Standing Ovation At TIFF 2024; Earns Praise From Real-Life Star

Jharrel Jerome and Jennifer Lopez’s Unstoppable impressed Anthony Robles, the real-life subject of the film, at its TIFF premiere on Friday, September 6. The film also wowed the Toronto International Film Festival audience, who gave it a standing ovation once the credits rolled out.

Robles, a wrestler born with one leg who went on to win an NCAA national championship in 2011 while competing for Arizona State University, whose character Jerome portrays in the film, spoke to People during the film’s showcase, sharing the experience of watching his inspiring life journey depicted on screen.

He, who served as a producer on the production and is credited as a stunt double for Jerome, told the publication that he feels the Unstoppable team “nailed” the message, “Which is no matter what you’re wrestling, you can overcome it. You can be unstoppable.” Although there were “a couple of things here and there that [we] weren’t able to fit in the film,” Anthony expressed he is pleased with “the overall message.”

Sharing the most difficult part about letting his life story be adapted into a feature, the combatant said that it certainly was sharing the uncomfortable details of his life with the production team, but he also acknowledged that, to effectively tell his story, that was the most crucial part. “They had to know the scars that I went through and what I dealt with. I think that was tough for me, but it was also therapeutic,” Robles remarked.

Lopez, who plays his character’s on-screen mother, Judy, thanked Robles and his mother in real life for trusting the filmmakers with the sensitive information about their lives and knowing that the team wouldn’t misuse it but only use it to tell their story in a well-deserved way.

“It is one of the most beautiful, most inspiring stories I think I’ve ever seen on screen,” Lopez said of the film.

She attended the Unstoppable premiere amid much buzz around her recent separation from Ben Affleck, the co-producer of the film. The Argo star, understandably, sat the showcase out, trusting his Artists Equity partner and friend Matt Damon to take care of the business.

In addition to Lopez and Jerome, Unstoppable stars Michael Peña, Don Cheadle, and Bobby Cannavale. William Goldenberg—who previously worked with Affleck as an editor on his earlier mentioned film and 2023’s Air—made his directorial debut with the movie.

Unstoppable will be in select theaters in December and will soon debut on Prime Video.

Who Was Sergio Mendes? All About Grammy-Winning Brazilian Music Icon As He Passes Way At 83

TRIGGER WARNING: This article contains mentions of death.

Sérgio Mendes, a legendary musician from Brazil who popularized bossa nova with his band Brasil ’66 in the 1960s, has passed away at the age of 83. The popular musician’s family posted a statement on his social media accounts to confirm his passing. According to his family, the effects of his prolonged COVID-19 illness led to his death.

The statement read, “His wife and musical partner for the past 54 years, Gracinha Leporace Mendes, was by his side, as were his loving children. Mendes last performed in November 2023 to sold-out and wildly enthusiastic houses in Paris, London and Barcelona. “For the last several months, his health had been challenged by the effects of long-term Covid.”

Sergio Mendes was born in Niterói on 11 February 1941. The young Mendes was encouraged by his father, a physician, to pursue conservatory training in order to pursue a career as a classical pianist.

His passion for classical music, however, faded as he approached Rio de Janeiro and fell in love with Brazilian and American jazz. He began performing in nightclubs in the late 1950s as his love for jazz expanded, coinciding with the emergence of bossa nova, a jazz-infused samba offshoot.

He soon started performing in neighborhood trios and quartets before moving to the US in 1962 with his band Brasil ’66. They gained fame for their 1967 hit song The Look of Love and their 1966 Portuguese-language single Mas Que Nada.

As his career progressed, he worked with a number of legendary artists, including Burt Bacharach, Stevie Wonder, Frank Sinatra, Herb Albert, and Quincy Jones. Never Gonna Let You Go, Night and Day, and Scarborough Fair are a few of his other standout tracks.

In 2005, just over ten years later, he was honored with a Lifetime Achievement Grammy. His album Bom Tempo earned him another Grammy for Brazilian contemporary pop album five years later.

He also contributed to the music production of the animated films Rio and Rio 2. Mendes was nominated for an Oscar in 2012 for Best Original Song for Real in Rio.

Mendes is now survived by wife, Gracinha Leporace, children Tiago and Gustavo, three children from his first mrriage, Bernardo, Rodrigo, and Isabella, as well as seven grandchildren.

‘Should I Grant Bail To Kolkata Rape Accused?’ Court On CBI Lawyer’s Absence

The absence of the CBI’s investigating officer in the rape and murder of the trainee doctor in Kolkata and a 40-minute delay in the arrival of the agency’s lawyer prompted an angry court in the city to wonder if it should grant bail to the main accused. The court also pulled up the agency and said this reflected a “lethargic attitude” on its part.

The developments in court also prompted an attack on the CBI and the BJP from the Trinamool Congress, which has been under fire over its handling of the horrific crime, with the party alleging that attempts are being made to “sabotage justice”. The investigation had been transferred to the agency from the Kolkata Police on the directions of the Calcutta High Court.

Hearing the bail petition of Sanjay Roy – a civic volunteer who has been arrested for raping and killing the trainee doctor at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital – on Friday afternoon, a magistrate at the Sealdah court noted that the CBI’s investigating officer was not present for the hearing.

As Roy’s lawyer made arguments for bail, Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate Pamela Gupta was informed that the public prosecutor would be arriving late. While the wait for the lawyer continued, the magistrate remarked, “Should I grant bail to Sanjay Roy? This reflects a severely lethargic attitude on the part of the CBI. It is very unfortunate.”

The lawyer eventually reached about 40 minutes late, prompting the defence attorney to also raise the issue of the delay. The arguments then continued and, after hearing both sides, the magistrate sent Roy to judicial custody for 14 days.

Reacting to what had happened in the court, the Trinamool Congress said this reflected a “blatant disregard for justice”.

“The court got angry, waited, and yet no one came. We want to ask what happened. Why is the opposition not reacting to this? It has been over 24 days and over 570 hours since the CBI took over the investigation, what has been the result? The entire country is asking. This shows that the CBI is not taking the case seriously…” Trinamool Congress leader Chandrima Bhattacharya said.

In two different posts on X, the Trinamool Congress also hit out at the BJP and the CPM.

“Today, during the R G Kar case hearing, the Investigating Officer & Public Prosecutor of @CBIHeadquarters went MIA (missing in action). Is this not an outright insult to the victim? A blatant disregard for justice? Where are the demands for accountability? Have @BJP4India & @CPIM_WESTBENGAL lost their voice?” the party’s handle posted.

“After 24 days of stalling, @CBIHeadquarters  didn’t even bother to send their Investigating Officer or Public Prosecutor for the R G Kar case hearing. This is nothing short of SABOTAGING JUSTICE!” it said in another post, adding that the CBI should stop “dragging its feet” and the BJP should take out a protest march against this.

The trainee doctor was raped and murdered inside a seminar hall of the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital and her body was found on August 9. Her autopsy report, which put the time of death between 3 and 5 am, revealed that several injuries were inflicted on her before she was smothered to death.
