Scientists have discovered an old record of complex brain surgery in China’s Xinjiang. Interestingly, there are indications on this perfectly preserved human skull that a head injury was treated surgically by making a hole in the cranium, as per a report in New Scientist. The scientists speculate that Chinese shamanic doctors probably performed the treatment around 2700 years ago.

The Yanghai cemetery, located in Xinjiang, is a large and ancient burial site that houses the remains of a clan who practised shamanism, which is a belief system that involves employing trance to interact with the supernatural. A skull belonging to a man who lived between 750 and 800 BC that was discovered in a cemetery was analysed by Qian Wang of Texas A&M University and his fellow researchers using CT scans.

As per the outlet, the man had suffered a blunt force injury that resulted in an accumulation of blood beneath his head, known as an epidural haematoma. This can be fatal and places strain on the brain.

Similar to how this ailment would be treated today, a bit of the skull was removed by what was likely a shaman doctor in order to heal the injury and relieve the haematoma. This is referred to as a craniotomy in modern surgery. It is performed on patients suffering from head traumas or for the relief of intracranial pressure, among other reasons.

The person survived the treatment and continued to live for at least eight weeks, according to signs of healing found within the walls of the fracture lines.

The researcher said, “In order to successfully remove the haematoma, the doctor was able to design a bone flap according to the injury by using the fracture lines.” According to Mr Wang, this is the most ” advanced and skilled craniotomy ever found” in the wider Eurasian region.

Mr Wang stated that while there isn’t concrete proof that the surgery was performed by a shaman doctor, there are other discoveries in the area that support the theory. One person at the Yanghai cemetery was recognised as a shaman based on a bronze knife and pointed instrument, known as an awl, that were likely surgical instruments and were hanging from his waist. There has been evidence of cannabis use as an anaesthetic at the cemetery.

In the video, a fleet of luxurious Ferrari supercars is caught in the midst of a lengthy traffic jam on Church Street Bel Road. While some cars are patiently waiting behind other vehicles, others are seen crawling through the city’s congested streets.

This ironic sight quickly gained traction on social media, sparking much chatter and amusement. Since being shared, the clip has garnered 4.9 million views, and close to 2.5 lakh likes. 

The video also captured the attention of the entrepreneur and former Shark Tank India judge. He wrote, ”More like Bengaluru takes down Ferrari! I feel the pain of having so many horses and being stuck in traffic.”

Reacting to the video, one user wrote, ”Imagine spending 6 Cr just to be stuck in traffic with the rest of before.” Another commented, ”Dream sight of every automobile enthusiast.” A third said, ”Bengaluru never stops in traffic. Amazing video. Shows the reality.”

 According to the latest report by Greenpeace India, the average commute time for car users in Bengaluru is typically observed to be a minimum of one hour when covering a standard travel distance of 10 kilometers. Meanwhile, another report has revealed that Bengaluru suffered a loss of ₹ 19,725 crore per year due to its traffic delays, congestion, stoppage of signals, time loss, fuel loss, and related factors.

Last month, Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar said a 190-km tunnel has been proposed to ease traffic congestion in the city, and 8 companies qualified for it.  These companies will study and report on how the tunnel road should be, whether it should be four or six lanes, from where it should begin and end, and a decision also needs to be taken on whether it should be expanded across the city, he said.

All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Bhopal has invited applications for hiring Medical Officer (General Duty) on contractual basis from eligible MBBS doctors. The institute will conduct Walk-in-Interview for selecting the eligible candidate to the post. The date of interview has been scheduled for November 16, 2023 at AIIMS, Bhopal.

The job vacancy is open for four positions. Candidates for the four positions will be selected from each of the categories including unreserved, Other Backward Class (OBC), Economically Weaker Section (EWS) and Scheduled Tribes (ST). The monthly pay to the candidates selected will be Rs 89,000 per month.

The hiring will initially be done for a period of six months which will further be extendable to another six months or one year maximum, whichever is earlier, the institute noted.  

Eligibility

The maximum age limit of the candidates applying to the post can be 40 years of age.

In an official notification released on the website, AIIMS Bhopal mentioned, “Candidate should possess a recognised MBBS degree qualification included in the First Schedule or Second Schedule or Part II of the Third Schedule (other than licentiate qualifications) to the Indian Medical Council Act 1956. Holders of educational qualification included in Part II of Third Schedule should also fulfil specified in sub (3) of Section 13 of the Indian Medical Council Act, 1956. The candidate must have permanent registration with Medical Council of India/National Medical Council.”

Application fees

The application fees for candidates belonging to the General/OBC/EWS is Rs 1,000. No application fees will be charged from PwBD/SC/ST and women candidates.
