The teaser of the upcoming Malayalam film Unmadham has finally been unveiled, offering a tense and atmospheric glimpse into a mystery that appears to blur the lines between fear, superstition and psychological unrest. Headlined by Kunchacko Boban and featuring Lijomol Jose in a prominent role, the film marks the directorial debut of acclaimed editor Kiran Das.

Known for his editing work in critically acclaimed Malayalam films such as Joji, Ambili and Thondimuthalum Driksakshiyum, Kiran now moves behind the camera with what appears to be an eerie investigative thriller rooted in the everyday lives of policemen and their families.

A mysterious case with ominous consequences

The teaser opens on a domestic note. Lijomol’s character is seen arguing with her husband, a police constable played by Kunchacko Boban, over his desire to move out of the cramped government quarters allotted to police families. The exchange feels grounded and familiar, but the mood quickly shifts once Kunchacko’s character hints at a possible way out of their struggles.

From there, the teaser transitions into a tense montage packed with whispers, rumours and fragments surrounding a mysterious case. Different characters offer conflicting perspectives about the investigation, with many suggesting that anyone who tries to uncover the truth meets with tragedy or misfortune. The sense of dread steadily builds as the visuals hint at violence, paranoia and psychological breakdowns.

Rather than relying on loud jump scares, the teaser leans heavily into mood and intrigue. The visuals maintain a gritty realism while slowly introducing unsettling imagery that suggests the story may move between crime procedural territory and psychological horror.

Kunchacko Boban, who has increasingly experimented with darker and more layered characters in recent years, appears to be playing another morally and emotionally conflicted man. The actor has consistently balanced mainstream entertainers with unconventional thrillers, and Unmadham seems to continue that trajectory.

Strong supporting cast and technical crew

Apart from Kunchacko and Lijomol, the film features a sprawling ensemble cast including Siddique, Sudheesh, Vishakh Nair, Kottayam Nazeer, Gokulan, Shaju Sreedhar and Sijoy Varghese among others.

Kiran Das is also handling the editing duties for the film, which is hardly surprising considering his long-standing reputation in Malayalam cinema for crafting immersive narrative rhythms through sharp editing choices. Given his previous collaborations on several acclaimed films, expectations are high regarding the pacing and tonal consistency of Unmadham.

The music for the film is composed by Mujeeb Majeed, while cinematography is handled by Arjun Seth. The technical crew also includes production designer Dileep Nath and stunt choreographer Kalai Kingson.

Though the makers have not yet announced an official release date, the teaser has already sparked curiosity among Malayalam cinema audiences for its unsettling atmosphere and grounded presentation. At a time when psychological thrillers continue to find a strong audience in Malayalam cinema, Unmadham appears poised to join that growing list with a distinctly moody and character-driven approach.

With an intriguing premise, an experienced technical team and a performer like Kunchacko Boban leading the narrative, the film has already positioned itself as one to watch out for in the coming months.
