Unni Mukundan to Portray Narendra Modi in Biopic Maa Vande

To mark Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s 75th birthday, Silver Cast Creations has announced Maa Vande, a multilingual biopic that will chronicle the leader’s life from his early years in Gujarat to his position as head of the nation. The film is written and directed by Telugu filmmaker Kranthi Kumar C.H. and produced by Veer Reddy M.

Carrying the tagline “The Anthem of a Mother”, the film’s narrative will revolve around Modi’s personal journey, placing particular emphasis on the bond he shared with his late mother, Heeraben Modi. Director Kranthi Kumar described the project as the culmination of a two-year effort and a personal dream. He credited political guidance and industry support in helping shape the vision and said the story’s emotional core lies in the mother-son relationship.

Casting and Creative Team

In the lead role is Unni Mukundan, one of Malayalam cinema’s rising stars, known for films such as Malikappuram, Marco and Meppadiyan. For him, taking on the part is both a responsibility and a personal journey. Having grown up in Ahmedabad, he first knew Modi as the state’s Chief Minister. Meeting him in person in 2023, he said, left a lasting impression.

Unni recalled being struck by two words Modi shared in Gujarati: “Jhookvanu Nahi”, meaning “Never Bow Down”. He explained that this phrase has since guided him in his own life and will be a touchstone in approaching the role.

The film has attracted a strong line-up of technicians. Cinematographer KK Senthil Kumar, known for RRR, will lens the project, while editor Sreekar Prasad brings his National Award-winning experience to the cutting room. Production design will be helmed by Sabu Cyril, the creative force behind Baahubali, with music composed by Ravi Basrur of KGF fame. The action choreography is in the hands of King Solomon, whose work includes Baahubali, RRR and Kalki 2898 AD.

Wider Context and Future Plans

Maa Vande is planned as a pan-India release, reaching audiences in Hindi, English and all major regional languages including Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Kannada, Gujarati and Marathi. Details of the supporting cast and release schedule are yet to be revealed.

This is not the first attempt at a Modi biopic. In 2019, Vivek Oberoi starred in PM Narendra Modi, directed by Omung Kumar. However, the new film seeks to offer a more intimate exploration of the man behind the leader, with particular focus on his formative years and his mother’s influence.

For Unni Mukundan, the film arrives at a crucial moment in his career. Alongside this project, he is working with veteran director Joshiy on an upcoming action entertainer, and he has also announced his directorial debut for 2026, a superhero film.

With its combination of personal storytelling and grand cinematic scale, Maa Vande has already positioned itself as one of the most anticipated biopics in recent years.

Ishaan Khatter and Vishal Jethwaâs Homebound Trailer Highlights Casteism Struggles

The highly praised film Homebound, directed by Neeraj Ghaywan, released its trailer on Wednesday for Indian audiences. The movie, which premiered at Cannes and won an award at the Toronto International Film Festival, is a moving story about two friends who face caste and communal discrimination while trying to achieve their dream of becoming police officers.

The trailer shows two friends in rural India, Mohammad Shoaib, played by Ishaan Khatter, and Chandan Kumar, played by Vishal Jethwa, as they prepare for police recruitment exams. Shoaib, employed as an office boy in an MNC, experiences discrimination due to his religion, while Chandan, a Dalit, is subjected to caste-based insults. Both individuals believe that securing a government job, especially one involving a uniform, will enable them to gain the respect that society has not given them. Janhvi Kapoor is also featured in the film, playing a friend to the two, a young PhD aspirant who is also dealing with her own set of restrictions.

Dharma Productions, the studio backing the film, shared the trailer on their YouTube channel and social media platforms. Fans were moved by it, finding it both touching and somewhat jarring. A comment read, “My God. All are too good… batana mushkil hai kisne jyada acha kaam kia hai (It’s difficult to say who has done better).” Another fan added, “Cried while watching this trailer! As an aspiring filmmaker from a middle-class family after being rejected from film school, I can relate a lot. It’s so inspiring to see this kind of film, stories, and filmmakers are getting celebrated!”

The film is based on a true story that was originally recounted in a 2020 New York Times essay by Basharat Peer. This essay, titled “A Friendship, a Pandemic and a Death Beside the Highway,” told the experiences of two migrant workers during the Covid-19 pandemic. The film marks Neeraj Ghaywan’s return to directing, a decade after his debut film, Masaan. Homebound secured the second runner-up position in the International People’s Choice Award competition at TIFF 2025. Its release in India is scheduled for September 26th.
