People In North Suffering Due To Air Pollution, Says AAP Spokesperson

Aam Aadmi Party Senior leader and National spokesperson Reena Gupta attacked the Centre, alleging that the entire North India is struggling with air pollution, but it has no concrete action plan to control it.

Reena Gupta, in a press conference, said, “People in Northern India are suffering due to air pollution, but the Central Government lacks any action plan to control it. The surprising thing is that on October 24, the Central Government shut down that database. They closed the SAFAR website because we began raising our voices that 70 per cent of Delhi’s air pollution is coming from outside Delhi, most of which is from BJP-ruled states.”

The System of Air Quality and Weather Forecasting And Research (SAFAR) is a national initiative introduced by the Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES) to measure the air quality of a metropolitan city, by measuring the overall pollution level and the location-specific air quality of the city.

The system is indigenously developed by the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM), Pune and is operationalized by the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

The AAP National Spokesperson said, “Currently, only the Kejriwal government in Delhi is taking strong measures to reduce air pollution by implementing winter and summer action plans. As a result, Delhi’s air quality has seen a 30 per cent improvement in the last few years.”

Pointing out that 70 per cent of Delhi’s air pollution is coming from outside states, she said, “Data from the central government’s IMD department’s website reveals that 70 per cent of Delhi’s air pollution is coming from outside states. When they raised their voices about controlling pollution from outside states, the Central Government shut down that website.”

Expressing her concern over rising AQI levels in northern India, Reena Gupta said, “As the winter season comes, the air quality of the entire northern region of India deteriorates. Be it UP, Delhi, Punjab, Gurgaon, etc. Doctors will tell you that there is a sudden rise in the number of patients with asthma during the winter in northern India. As of 2019, 99.5 per cent of districts in India did not meet WHO’s air quality guidelines. This implies that 99 per cent of the people in the country are not breathing ‘healthy Air.’ This is a big emergency, and the Central Government should take appropriate measures concerning the health of Indians. To date, no plans have been announced by the PM and the Union Environment Minister.”

She emphasized that in the entire country, only Delhi’s CM Arvind Kejriwal is concerned about the people and their health. Each year Delhi’s CM Arvind Kejriwal announces the ‘Winter Action Plan’ and ‘Summer Action Plan’ to brief about measures to be taken by the Delhi Government to save common people from the deteriorating environment.

“In the list of 50 most polluted cities, 39 cities feature from India only. Among these 39, 20 most polluted cities are from UP but one would be shocked to know that the BJP-ruled UP government hasn’t ever mentioned ‘Air Quality.’ Only the Delhi government is working towards the air quality, and because of this, there’s been an improvement of 30 per cent in air quality,” she added.

Talking about the Supreme Court ruling and NGT order on Delhi pollution Reena Gupta said, “For the past 10 years, the Supreme Court has been telling the UP Government to find a solution to brick kilns because it cause a lot of air pollution. The Court also suggested using new technology, but the UP Government has not taken any steps in this regard. Even today, there are 2,000 brick kilns in the NCR that are operating with old technology. Among them, 150 kilns are in Ghaziabad, and 250 are in Muzaffarnagar. All the smoke from these kilns goes to Delhi. The National Green Tribunal (NGT) ordered that all industries should use clean fuel, meaning use PNG. After this, all industries in Delhi are running on PNG, but nothing has been done in the NCR so far.”

Reena Gupta said that a high-level meeting of all the Environment Ministers of the northern states should be convened and the SAFAR website should be restarted.

“The Aam Aadmi Party has two demands. The first demand is that a high-level meeting of all the Environment Ministers of the northern states should be convened. The second demand is to reopen the SAFAR website because the public should know where the pollution is coming from and which government agencies are responsible.”

“The Central Government is only good at passing the buck; they don’t do any real work. Only the Delhi government is actively working to reduce pollution. The Kejriwal government has shut down power plants that were spreading pollution. They have implemented an electric vehicle policy to reduce pollution and encouraged industries to switch to PNG. However, unless all other state governments work similarly, pollution cannot be reduced,” the spokesperson concluded.

Union Minister Demands CBI Probe Into Tamil Nadu Petrol Bomb Attack Case

Union Minister L Murugan on Saturday demanded a CBI or NIA Probe into the alleged petrol bomb attack outside Raj Bhawan in Tamil Nadu three days ago.

“Tamil Nadu Government should make law and order right and at the same time the raj Bhavan petrol bomb issue should not be taken casually. The investigation must be done who is behind the person(who allegedly threw the bomb)? Who made him to do so?” he told news agency ANI in Trichy on Saturday.

“I have been asking from the first day that the CBI or NIA must investigate and probe this Raj Bhavan petrol bomb hurdle case, then only the full truth will come out,” he added.

The Tamil Nadu DGP, in an official statement, denied the charges made by the Raj Bhavan regarding yesterday’s petrol bomb attack near Raj Bhawan.

“Raj Bhavan’s statement that the petrol bomb exploded and that the petrol bombs were hurled by more than one person is totally contrary to the truth,” the DGP office said in an official statement.

Additional Commissioner of Police, Prem Anand Sinha on Wednesday said an unidentified person tried to throw some bottles of petrol outside Raj Bhavan near barricades.

He further said that the motive behind the attack is being determined.

“Around 3 pm, an unidentified person tried to throw some bottles of petrol outside Raj Bhavan near barricades. As soon as this was noticed by the security personnel present there, they surrounded him, confiscated other bottles from his hand and immediately handed him over to the patrol vehicle and took him to the police station,” ACP Sinha told ANI.

The person has been identified as criminal K Vinod who is a habitual offender with 6-7 cases against him, as per police.

The Tamil Nadu Raj Bhavan on Thursday said the Chennai police did not register its complaint on the petrol bomb incident, and alleged a fair probe was ‘killed’ even before it began. Further, it alleged the police diluted the attack as an act of simple vandalism and did not take up detailed interrogation.

“Police did not register Raj Bhavan’s complaint on the attack. The police Suo Motu diluted the attack as an act of simple vandalism and in a hurry got arrested accused was remanded to jail at midnight waking up the magistrate and preventing detailed interrogation which could expose those behind the attack,” Tamil Nadu Raj Bhavan stated.”A fair investigation is killed before it begins,” Raj Bhavan added.

Earlier on Wednesday, Tamil Nadu BJP President K Annamalai alleged that the petrol bomb incident outside Raj Bhawan shows that the DMK government is “sponsoring” these attacks, adding that Chief Minister MK Stalin is adopting “diversification tactics.

“The DGP office also clarified its statement on the registration of complaint over the attack on the Governor’s convoy in April last year.

In April last year, a convoy of Governor RN Ravi in Mayiladuthurai was attacked. Referring to the letter of the Governor’s Aide-de-Camp, State DGP said “A statement by the governor’s office that the governor’s convoy was attacked in Mayiladuthirai and the complaint given by the governor’s office and it’s not filed, is against the truth. Actually, the governor’s convoy was not attacked but his follow-up vehicle was and a case was filed in that incident and 73 persons were arrested”.

US Willing To Fight China On Philippines’ Behalf, Says Biden Amid Maritime Collisions

As hostilities between China and the Philippines in the South China Sea escalates, US President Joe Biden said that the US military is willing to fight nuclear-armed China on behalf of the Philippines. His statement came after ships from the two Asian countries collided near a disputed unpopulated island in the South China Sea, the New York Post reported.

“The United States defence agreement with the Philippines is ironclad. Any attack on the Filipino aircraft, vessels or armed forces will invoke our mutual defence treaty with the Philippines,” Biden said during a joint press conference.

According to the 1951 mutual defence pact, the US and the Philippines will jointly “defend themselves against external armed attack.”

Earlier on Sunday, two of Manila’s military ships collided with a Chinese vessel that sought to block them from reaching the disputed Second Thomas Shoal, which is strategically located along important commercial shipping routes but also submerged at high tide, according to New York Post.

The Second Thomas Shoal is located much closer to the Philippines than to China and is one of dozens of islands in the South China Sea disputed by China and the governments of nearby countries including Vietnam, Malaysia, Brunei and Taiwan.

The Philippines summoned the Chinese ambassador on Monday about these two near collisions between Chinese and Filipino ships over the weekend in the disputed South China Sea, local media reported.

The Philippine Daily Inquirer reported today that the country’s Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) had summoned a Chinese envoy after Chinese vessels hit a resupply boat contracted by the Philippines armed forces and a Philippine coast guard ship in the Spratly Islands chain in the West Philippine Sea on October 22 morning.

Jonathan Malaya, a spokesperson for the Philippines National Security Council, told a press conference on Monday that one of the Philippines’s boats was damaged in the incident.

China’s move was “provocative, irresponsible and illegal” and “imperilled the safety of the crew” of the Philippine boats, the National Task Force for the West Philippine Sea said as reported by CNN.

Moreover, House Republicans initiated an impeachment inquiry last month into the president’s role in his son Hunter Biden and brother James Biden’s foreign business dealings, including a pair of ventures with Chinese government-linked companies that resulted in millions of dollars of income going to the Bidens.
