Veteran Marathi actor Vijay Kadam passes away at 68 after long battle with cancer

Trigger Warning: This article contains a mention of death.

Veteran Marathi actor Vijay Kadam left for his heavenly abode on Saturday morning. He was 68. The senior actor had been reportedly battling cancer for a long time. Kadam’s friend, actor Jaywant Wadkar, confirmed his demise.

According to ANI, Jaywant said, “He had been courageously fighting cancer. Initially, he recovered, but his health eventually deteriorated.” Kadam’s friend added that he had an acidity attack around 25 days ago.

Talking about his filmography in Indian cinema, Wadkar stated that Vijay Kadam was “extremely talented”. He said further that he explored various projects ranging from Marathi cinema to Hindi films in his decades-long career.

Wadkar, who considered Vijay Kadam as his family, praised the late actor by saying, “It is impossible to find an actor like him again.” While mourning the loss of his friend, Wadkar said that his death has left a void in the industry.

As per the agency, Kadam’s cremation took place at the Andheri-Oshiwara crematorium on Saturday afternoon. The late actor is survived by his wife and son.

Vijay Kadam began his cancer treatment last year and underwent chemotherapy along with a couple of surgeries, News18 reported. He is best remembered for his contribution to Marathi cinema and theater.

His notable works in the Marathi film industry include Irsal Kaarti, De Danadan, Chashme Bahaddar, and many more. He also worked in Marathi movies like Police Line, Halad Rusli Kunku Hasala, and De Dhadak Bedhadak.

He rose to fame after starring in Purshottam Berde’s Marathi stage play, Tur Tur (1983-84). The play also featured late actor Laxmikanth Berde of Hum Aapke Hain Koun fame. Vijay started his acting career in theater in the 1980s era. Apart from Tur Tur, he also worked in Viccha Majhi Puri Kara and Pappa Sanga Kunache.

Vijay Kadam appeared in Arshad Warsi‘s debut film, Tere Mere Sapne. Kadam played the role of traffic policeman in it. The 1996 movie also starred Chandrachur Singh and Priya Gill. The late actor last appeared in the Marathi TV series Ti Prat Aaliye. The show was released in 2021.

Throwback: When Johnny Depp Called Angelina Jolie ‘A Walking Poem’

Throwback: When Johnny Depp Called Angelina Jolie ‘A Walking Poem’

Johnny Depp and Angelina Jolie, two of Hollywood’s greatest, barely got the opportunity to collaborate, except for 2010’s The Tourist. The action thriller encompasses Jolie’s agenda to establish Depp, who plays an American tourist visiting Italy, as her lover who is wanted by the police.

In real life, Depp was enamored by Jolie’s beauty and talents, inspiring a worthy remark still cherished by fans. After the film underwent multiple revisions, the Pirates of the Caribbean star finally made it opposite Jolie to work on their first and only film ever. Director Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck helmed The Tourist.

Despite mixed reviews of their on-screen chemistry, as it came with high expectations, the A-listers’s support for each other was unhindered. They publicly lauded each other’s work, with Johnny Depp, 61, celebrating his co-star with a poetic insinuation.

“She’s everything. She’s kind of a walking poem, Angelina is,” Depp told Variety in an interview at the time. He explained the Oscar winner was an embodiment of “perfect” beauty and talent before praising her wit and sense of humor as well.

The Jeanne du Barry star quipped, “At the same time, she is very deep, very smart, very quick, very clever, very funny, and also has a very perverse sense of humor.”

Simultaneously, Jolie, 49, returned her co-star’s praises with her own, marking him as the nicest guy who was super fun to “hang out with” and a brilliant actor. “He’s just that friend you’re so happy to come to work and do scenes with. Plus, he’s such a brilliant actor,” the actress echoed later on.

Sadly, fans never got to see more of the Hollywood duo in other projects, and with Jolie and Depp both manufacturing fewer movies now, chances are grim for a potential pair-up in the future too.

Moreover, the three-time Oscar-nominated actor retired from Hollywood permanently in light of the poor treatment he was subjected to during the Amber Heard trials in 2020. He was dropped from Warner Bros.’ Fantastic Beasts and Disney as the veteran pirate Capt. Jack Sparrow, per Marca.

He continues to act in other film industries, as the actor recently released the biopic Modi, based on Italian artist Amedeo Modigliani, at the Venice Film Festival. Helmed by Depp and his production, IN, Modi has secured distribution in the country via Be Water, per Variety.

There have been reports on Depp’s continued friendship with the Maleficient star since their 2010 collaboration. It is said that he recommended celebrity divorce lawyer Laura Wasser, who represented him during his divorce, to Angelina Jolie amid her split from ex-husband Brad Pitt in 2016. It was speculated if Depp and Jolie’s chemistry in The Tourist had any effect on her marriage to Pitt, but it was soon dispelled.

“Angelina hired Johnny’s lawyer to represent her based on the advice that he has given her,” an insider disclosed to The Sun back then. They also hinted that the star hadn’t lost touch after the film, with Jolie even rallying for Depp during his intense divorce from Amber Heard in 2017.

“Keep Watch”: Veep On Congress Leader’s “Bangladesh Can Happen Here” Remark

Guard against the narrative advanced by some that what happened in Bangladesh can happen in India, advised Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar, taking a swipe at Congress leaders and expressing shock and surprise at the equivalence drawn between the two south Asian neighbours.

Sheikh Hasina, 76, quit as prime minister in the face of a student-led uprising on Monday and fled by helicopter to longtime ally New Delhi.

“Be on watch out. Efforts by some to infuse a narrative that what happened in our neighbourhood is bound to happen in our Bharat, is deeply concerning. How can a citizen of this country having been a Member of Parliament, and the other who has seen enough of Foreign Service takes no time in saying that what happened in the neighbourhood will happen in India,” said the Vice President at the platinum jubilee celebrations of the Rajasthan High Court in Jodhpur today.

On Tuesday, Congress leader Salman Khurshid, at a book release function, said that though “everything may look normal on the surface”, what is happening in Bangladesh could happen in India.

Congress leader Shashi Tharoor, who was also present at the event, said on Wednesday that he could not explain what Mr Khurshid meant but the larger message that Bangladesh has given is about the importance of democracy and free and fair elections.

BJP MP Rajiv Pratap Rudy castigated Mr Khurshid and termed his remarks “anarchist”.

Ms Hasina’s last 15 years in power were marked by arrests of opposition leaders, crackdowns on free speech and suppression of dissent.

Protests began in June after student groups’ demands for the scrapping of a controversial quota system in government jobs escalated into a movement seeking the end of her rule.

India too witnessed massive protests over the controversial citizenship law and the new farm laws in the recent years.

Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus and his newly named interim government set out Friday to restore “law and order” after a student-led uprising and deadly mass protests forced Ms Hasina, the five-time prime minister, to flee the country.

Officials of Hasina’s former ruling party, the Awami League, have gone into hiding after revenge attacks saw some of their offices torched, while former opposition groups such as the key Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) are rebuilding after years of crushing repression.

In the immediate aftermath of Hasina’s fall, some businesses and homes owned by Hindus were attacked, a group seen by some in Muslim-majority Bangladesh as having been her supporters.

Bangladeshi Hindus account for around eight percent of the country’s population.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday urged “safety and protection of Hindus and all other minority communities”.

More than 450 people were killed in the unrest leading up to Hasina’s departure, including dozens of police officers killed during clampdowns on demonstrations.

The caretaker administration Mr Yunus, 84, helms has said that restoration of law and order is its “first priority”.
