This West Bengal City Worships Dogs, Celebrates “Kukur Tihar” Festival

Animal lovers celebrated the “Kukur Tihar” or Kukur Puja festival at a street dog rescue centre in Siliguri on Saturday afternoon to honour the man’s best friends, dogs. Kukur Tihar or Kukur Puja literally means the worship of dogs. This festival is celebrated during Diwali, the festival of lights.

During Kukur Tihar, people offer prayers and honour dogs, not just pets but also strays. The canines are garlanded, tikkas applied on their foreheads and plentiful food is offered to them.

The festival is dedicated to dogs who are regarded as the guardian and messenger of ‘Yama’, who is the lord of death.

Animal helpline, a renowned animal lovers organisation of Siliguri celebrated the day with great enthusiasm. In the morning the members of the voluntary organisation bathed around a hundred street-rescued dogs and worshipped them. They also cooked special food for them following the festival of Kukur Tihar.

Priya Rudra, founder of animal helpline, Siliguri said, “It’s a very special day for us like Durga Puja and Kali Puja. During the day, we tried to give special attention to them. We worship them and serve special dishes. It’s a very important day for us because there are so many festivals for human beings, but nothing for animals. A day like Kukur Tihar tells us that animals are also an important part of our society. People should love and respect them. During the Diwali festival people like to burst crackers which are very disturbing for the animals. So they should be concerned if animal-like dogs are very much near to them during the time of bursting crackers.”

Priya Roy, a member of animal helpline, Siliguri said, “We celebrated Kukur Tihar at our shelter today with great enthusiasm. Like God, we also worshipped street dogs today. It’s my appeal to the people that they respect street dogs and serve food to them as per your limits.”

Watch: New Yorkers Lift Illegally Parked Car To Give Way To Bus, Internet Calls Them “Heroes”

In an inspiring display of working together for the community, a group of New Yorkers got together to lift an illegally parked car and move it to the side in order to give way to a bus. A video posted on Instagram by Reddit showed the group of pedestrians joining hands to accomplish the seemingly impossible task.

“Every day heroes for sure,” the caption of the post read. “New Yorkers lift illegally parked car, so Metro bus can turn,” read the text on the clip.

Watch the video below:

In the video, a few people are seen standing around a car. Moments later, they are seen lifting the vehicle and moving it out of the way so the bus can operate freely.

The clip was shared on Instagram a few days back and since it has accumulated more than 167,000 likes and nearly 3 million views. Internet users were quick to praise the bystanders for ensuring the bus could resume its service promptly.

“Wow! Nice to see something positive from the Big Apple! Great job men!” wrote one user. “Together. We can move mountains!” commented another.

“See, that’s community. We mind our business when it matters, but some things are just unacceptable. You don’t block traffic,” expressed a third. “Used to drive buses in NYC, I’ve hit a few illegally parked cars in my day. Best part is cops ticket the illegally parked car and their insurance company has to pay for the damages to the bus,” added another.

A person also explained how irresponsible parking can cause much inconvenience for everyone. “As a disabled rider dependent on public transportation, I daily see how stupid people who park, or “wait” in their cars. They not only inconvenience, obstruct, actually endanger, riders, drivers, bystanders, buses, other cars and drivers, and sometimes train. Simply to indulge self centered desire for saving a few seconds, or a few steps. Penalties should be more severe. Vehicles more quickly impounded,” they wrote.
