IC 814: The Kandahar Hijack Row: Patralekhaa says Anubhav Sinha directorial is not a ‘documentary’ amid allegations of whitewashing terrorism

Patralekhaa is currently enjoying the success of her recently released web show IC 814: The Kandahar Hijack. While there are appreciations surrounding the cast’s performance, this Netflix project has also found itself embroiled in a controversy involving the Government of India. Now while speaking to HT City, Patralekhaa has kept the record straight that the show is not a ‘documentary’.

The actress plays a cabin crew in IC 814: The Kandahar Hijack and last week, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting summoned Netflix’s content head amid allegations of distorting facts, whitewashing terrorism, and offending public sentiment. “This is not a documentary, clearly. It’s a show that has been written and, obviously, some parts have been imagined,” said Patralekhaa.

The 34-year-old said that several characters in the show didn’t use the real names of ones from the actual incident and called the attempt an earnest attempt at respecting the source material and yet bringing a fresh interpretation to it. “It’s a collaborative effort to bring authenticity and personal touch to the role,” she said.

Directed by Anubhav Sinha, this thrilling series is based on the December 24, 1999, hijack of Indian Airlines IC-814 aircraft by five terrorists – Ibrahim Athar, Sunny Ahmed Qazi, Zahoor Ibrahim, Shahid Akhter, and Sayed Shakir. The aircraft was hijacked with at least 154 passengers and crew onboard just 40 minutes after it took off from Kathmandu for Delhi.

Recalling this saddening incident, Patralekhaa shared that these memories became fresh when the show was first offered to her. “More than feeling (pressure), I was looking forward to it. I remember the hijacking incident from my childhood and the dramatic images from the news, of men with big guns. That was my first memory of Kandahar,” Patralekhaa recalled adding that the show would remain a ‘sweet part’ of her career trajectory.

Revisiting the shooting experience, the actress revealed that it took her some time to adapt to the set as she felt ‘very claustrophobic’. “We were inside a plane set with a large team — technicians, junior actors, actors’ staff. The physical space and the situation naturally brought me to the emotional state needed,” Patralekhaa opined.

The Greatest of All Time (GOAT) Day 3 Box Office Collection: Thalapathy Vijay records biggest Saturday of all time in Tamil Nadu

The Thalapathy Vijay led The Greatest of All Time has scored an excellent Saturday in Tamil Nadu with estimates in the range of Rs 27.50 crore. The Venkat Prabhu directorial has scored an all-time record with thje biggest Saturday collection, surpassing the previous best, LEO, which again featured Thalapathy Vijay in the lead. With this, the three-day total in Tamil Nadu stands at Rs 79.25 crore as per estimates, and the film is headed for an extended weekend in the range of Rs 107 to 110 crore.

The film is running riots in Tamil Nadu, however, the business in Kerala and Telugu states is not upto the mark. Surprisingly, the North Belt is warming up to The GOAT and the film could spring a surprise by putting up a respectable total in the long run. Interestingly, the business is coming despite a no-release in the national chains due to short OTT window. The three-day All-India total of The Greatest of All Time stands at a solid Rs 122.50 crore and the film is targeting an extended weekend in the North of Rs 160 crore.

The film is holding well in Karnataka too, though not at the level of LEO. The overseas business is off the roof with estimates indicating a 4-day opening weekend biz around the USD 14 Million mark, taking the worldwide total in the North of Rs 275 crore. The best performance in coming in from the United States, where the film is competing with LEO on a day to day basis, attempting to score an all-time record.

The good news for The GOAT lies in the fact that the home market, Tamil Nadu, is performing extremely well and the film will be aiming to enter the Rs 200 crore mark by the end of its run, emerging yet another blockbuster for the GOAT – Thalapathy Vijay – though we can say this with surety only on seeing the Monday hold.

Here’s the day wise break down of The Goat (All India)

Thursday: Rs 53.00 crore

Friday: Rs 29.50 crore

Saturday: Rs 40.00 crore

Total: Rs 122.50 crore

“Truly Delighted”: Rahul Gandhi Gets Warm Welcome In US

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi began his three-day visit to the US, arriving in Dallas, Texas, on Sunday, where he was warmly welcomed by members of the Indian diaspora and the Indian Overseas Congress (IOC).

Taking to his social media, the Congress leader shared the pictures of his welcome and wrote, “I am truly delighted by the warm welcome I’ve received in Dallas, Texas, USA, from the Indian Diaspora and members of the Indian Overseas Congress.”

“I eagerly look forward to engaging in meaningful discussions and insightful conversations that will further strengthen the bond between our two nations during this visit,” he added.

This is Rahul Gandhi’s first trip to America since the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

The Congress leader will be in Dallas, Texas, on September 8 and in Washington, DC, on September 9-10.

Earlier, announcing Rahul Gandhi’s visit, IOC chief Sam Pitroda said that the Indian diaspora, including NRI residents, technocrats, business leaders, students, media fraternity and even political leaders, are eager to welcome the Congress MP and are looking forward to having an interaction with him.

“There are lots of events planned with a variety of people because they also have interest in the states where Congress party runs governments, particularly the tech cities like Bangalore, Hyderabad, Mumbai and Pune. We see great interest in conversation with business and technological community,” he further informed.

“We look forward to a very successful visit and look forward to welcoming Rahul Gandhi to the US,” Pitroda said on a concluding note.

He also said that he was ‘bombarded’ with questions about Rahul Gandhi’s US visit from various quarters, and this video message was apparently to inform them about the Congress leader’s short but highly anticipated trip to the US.

Notably, Rahul Gandhi, after the 2024 Lok Sabha results, has been creating good momentum and garnering people’s support with his views on many issues of public interest. Political watchers anticipate his US visit to be more newsworthy and stir larger controversy back home this time.

Rahul won elections from two Lok Sabha constituencies – Rae Bareli and Wayanad, however, he chose to retain the former and leave the latter for his sister, Priyanka Gandhi.

In June this year, he was appointed the Leader of the Opposition (LoP) in the Lok Sabha after getting a nod from the Congress Working Committee (CWC).
