Tatas Can Recover Rs 766 Crore From Bengal For Singur Investment: Panel

The Bengal government has to pay Tata Motors a massive sum of Rs 765.78 crore with 11 per cent interest from September 2016 for the closure of its Nano factory in Singur, the company said today. The unanimous decision in favour of the company came from a three-member Arbitral Tribunal.

“With regard to the automobile manufacturing facility at Singur (West Bengal), this is to inform that the aforesaid pending Arbitral proceedings before a three-member Arbitral Tribunal has now been finally disposed of by a unanimous Award dated October 30, 2023 in favour of TML whereby Tata Motors has been held to be entitled to recover from the respondent (WBIDC) a sum of Rs 765.78 crore with interest thereon @ 11% p.a. from September 1, 2016 till actual recovery thereof,” Tata Motors said in a note to the National Stock Exchange.

“Tata Motors has also been held to be entitled to recover from the respondent (WBIDC) a sum of Rs 1 crore towards cost of the proceedings,” the note added.

Tatas had to abandon the Nano factory it planned in Bengal in 2008 following incessant protests spearheaded by Mamata Banerjee — who was then in the Opposition — and her Trinamool Congress.

After coming to power, the Trinamool government had offered Tatas alternative land for a factory. But the company had refused, saying it would prefer a compensation of Rs 154 crore which it paid the Left Front government to acquire the land.

In 2016, the Supreme Court ruled the Left Front government’s decision to acquire land in Singur “grossly perverse and illegal” in view of non-compliance with provisions of the Land Acquisition Act.

Tata Motors had defended the acquisition, contending that the government could not change its stance in the middle of a lawsuit just because a different political party had come to power.

The court said the government could do so if there is evidence that the acquisition was illegal. Tata then sought arbitration under its lease agreement with the state government that included it as a dispute-resolution mechanism.

The Left Front had acquired agricultural land in Singur for the Nano factory, flagging it as the beginning of a policy shift to industrialise the state and boost its dying economy.

MRI Machine Traps And Crushes Nurse In Horrifying Accident In US

A nurse was recently trapped between an MRI machine and a bed during a freak accident at a medical center in California. The nurse named Ainah Cervantes suffered crushing injuries that required surgery after the hospital bed was pulled uncontrollably into the MRI machine by its magnetic force, Fox News reported.

“I was getting pushed by the bed,” nurse Ainah Cervantes told investigators in a report obtained by KTVU. “Basically, I was running backwards, If I didn’t run, the bed would smash me underneath.”

The nurse had a severe laceration that needed surgery. According to documents, two embedded screws were removed. The patient who fell from the bed to the floor was unhurt.

Though the incident occurred in February, an investigation was not completed until several months later, Fox News reported. The report further said the probe by the California Department of Public Health found the Redwood City centre “failed to provide radiologic services in a safe manner.”

The probe pointed out several missteps leading up to the incident.

Investigators also said that there were no MRI personnel present inside the room during the incident. The report further said the incident also breached several of Kaiser’s MRI safety policies.

The investigation further revealed that the staff never received the safety training and the hospital failed to test the door alarm.

“The many safety failures … created a culture of unsafe practices,” the California Department of Public Health’s investigation stated.

Sheila Gilson, senior vice president for Kaiser Permanente San Mateo said that the nurse immediately received the care and support they needed.”

“This was a rare occurrence, but we are not satisfied until we understand why an accident occurs and implement changes to prevent it from occurring again,” Gilson said.
