Full Majority In Madhya Pradesh With PM’s Blessing: Shivraj Chouhan

The BJP’s Shivraj Singh Chouhan today said the party will retain power in the state with a full majority, minutes after early leads showed the BJP has crossed the halfway mark in the assembly election.

Early leads show the BJP has won 124 seats in the 230-seat assembly. The Congress trails with 100 seats, early leads show.

“… I am confident that with the blessings of the people and the able leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the BJP will form government again with a full majority,” Mr Chouhan said in a post on X, formerly known as Twitter.

‘भारत माता की जय, जनता जनार्दन की जय’

आज मध्यप्रदेश विधानसभा चुनाव के नतीजे आ रहे हैं और मुझे विश्वास है कि जनता के आशीर्वाद व आदरणीय प्रधानमंत्री श्री @narendramodi जी के कुशल नेतृत्व में भारतीय जनता पार्टी पूर्ण बहुमत के साथ फिर सरकार बनाने जा रही है।

BJP leader and Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia said he is confident people’s faith will be with the BJP. “We will wait till the complete results are in. We will form government with complete majority. The people’s faith in PM and the welfare schemes are the reasons for such a mandate.”

Congratulatory Poster Up, But Kamal Nath Trails In His Own Seat

Congratulatory Poster Up, But Kamal Nath Trails In His Own Seat

Even as a poster congratulating Kamal Nath for becoming the next chief minister of Madhya Pradesh has been put up at the Congress office in Bhopal, it is now emerging that the party’s state unit chief is trailing in his bastion of Chhindwara. Mr Nath has won from the Chhindwara Lok Sabha Constituency multiple times since 1998, but early leads indicate that he may lose from the Assembly seat this time.

The early leads for the constituency reflect those across the state, where the BJP seems headed for a clear majority.

Mr Nath, who has been confident of a Congress victory in the state, continued to stay that way on Sunday. “I have not seen any trends… don’t need to look till 11 am. I am very confident, I trust the voters…” he told news agency ANI shortly after counting of votes began.

The former chief minister is contesting against Vivek Bunty Sahu of the BJP, who is leading in the constituency.

The trends as of 11 am indicated a sweep for the BJP in the heartland state, where it has ruled since 2003, barring a 15-month period from 2018, when the Congress came to power. The government, led by Kamal Nath, fell after a rebellion by senior leader Jyotiraditya Scindia in 2020. Mr Scindia and more than 20 MLAs had joined the BJP, stripping the Congress-led government of its majority.

As per the trends, the BJP is leading in over 150 of the state’s 230 seats while the Congress has a lead in just 70.

If the trends hold, the sweep in the state will be a stupendous achievement for the BJP and its chief minister, Shivraj Singh Chouhan, who was at the helm in the state from 2005 to 2018 and made a comeback in 2020. Beating anti-incumbency after so many years is also being seen as proof of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s enduring popularity.

Mr Chouhan had not been declared the chief ministerial candidate in the state and the elections had been fought under the PM’s leadership.

With seven MPs, including three Union ministers, contesting the state polls, speculation was rife that the BJP may be looking beyond Mr Chouhan for the state’s top post this time, but experts say the sweep may make it difficult for the party to do so.

“I had said the BJP will get a comfortable majority and we are getting it,” Mr Chouhan said on Sunday.
