Upasana Konidela, wife of Ram Charan, recently stirred a hornet’s nest with her comments. At an event in IIT Hyderabad, the entrepreneur advised young women to freeze their eggs and that the biggest insurance for a woman is to save her eggs. Citing her own experience as an example, Upasana appealed to women to focus on becoming financially independent before planning a family.

Upasana found herself at the centre of the controversy and heated social media debate after her comments went viral. It triggered strong criticism from doctors as well as netizens; medical professionals pointed out that Upasana isn’t a doctor to give fertility advice. While some doctors explained that mere egg freezing doesn’t warrant a successful pregnancy at a later stage, others pointed out the high cost of the procedure which only someone from a privileged family like her can afford. Amid growing criticism and strong backlash, Upasana took to social media and said that she was glad to have ‘sparked a healthy debate.’
Addressing the trolls, Upasana asked a series of questions. “Is it wrong for a woman to marry for love instead of giving in to societal pressure? Is it wrong for her to wait until she finds the right partner?” The entrepreneur further debated whether it is wrong for a woman to choose when she wants to have children based on her own circumstances rather than thinking of marriage or having children early? Her choice of words seems to be focused on a woman’s career-driven approach.
Calling it a ‘Factcheck’, Upasana revealed that she married for love and companionship at 27 – a choice that she made on her own terms. At 29, she decided to freeze her eggs for personal and health reasons, something she had always spoken about openly to encourage women to explore their options. She welcomed her first child at 36 and she’s expecting twins at 39. Amid heavy trolling, she explained that she had given equal importance to building a career and nurturing marriage because a happy and a stable environment matters deeply when raising a family. According to Upasana, marriage and career are not competing priorities but equally meaningful parts of a fulfilled life. But she chose the timeline, which she believes is her ‘right’ and not a ‘privilege.’
