Madhavanâs GD Naidu biopic G.D.N locks release date with striking new poster

Actor R Madhavan’s ambitious biographical drama G.D.N has finally locked its theatrical release date after months of anticipation. The makers unveiled a new poster from the film on Tuesday, confirming that the Krishnakumar Ramkumar directorial will hit theatres on July 17.

The newly released poster features Madhavan as a young GD Naidu, standing before a crowd with folded hands, hinting at the larger-than-life public image of the industrial pioneer. Sharing space on the poster are Dushara Vijayan and Sathyaraj, both of whom are expected to play pivotal roles in the film.

A film based on one of India’s greatest innovators

Written and directed by Krishnakumar Ramkumar, best known for Oho Enthan Baby, the film traces the extraordinary life of GD Naidu, the Coimbatore-based inventor, engineer and entrepreneur who was often referred to as the “Edison of India”.

Known for his self-taught brilliance and unconventional approach to technology, GD Naidu played a transformative role in Indian manufacturing during the early twentieth century. He is credited with developing India’s first indigenous electric motor and introducing several practical inventions that made technology more accessible to ordinary people. His innovations ranged from ticket machines and petrol engines to electric appliances and grooming products.

The film appears to explore not just his inventions, but also the social and industrial climate that shaped his rise as one of South India’s most influential innovators.

Apart from Madhavan, the cast includes Jayaram, Priyamani and Yogi Babu in supporting roles.

Rocketry reunion and a strong technical team

G.D.N is backed by Vijay Moolan and Varghese Moolan under the banner Varghese Moolan Pictures. Madhavan is also producing the film alongside his wife Sarita through their home banner Tricolour Films.

The project marks another collaboration between Tricolour Films and Varghese Moolan Pictures after their acclaimed partnership on Rocketry: The Nambi Effect, which saw Madhavan step into the role of aerospace scientist Nambi Narayanan.

The film boasts a notable technical crew as well. Music is composed by Govind Vasantha, whose recent work in 96 and Meiyazhagan earned praise for its emotional depth and melodic sensibility. Cinematography is handled by Aravind Kamalanathan, who also serves as the creative producer on the project.

The multilingual release strategy suggests the makers are positioning G.D.N as a pan-Indian biographical drama. Besides Tamil, the film will also release in Telugu, Malayalam, Kannada and Hindi.

For Madhavan, the film continues his growing interest in portraying real-life figures whose contributions altered India’s scientific and cultural landscape. Following the success of Rocketry, expectations are naturally high for another performance-driven biopic rooted in history, innovation and personal struggle.

Whether G.D.N captures the complexity of the man behind the legend remains to be seen, but the film’s scale, subject matter and ensemble cast have already made it one of the more intriguing Tamil releases on the horizon.
