Canada is set to modernise its citizenship rules, which could benefit thousands of Indian-origin families and other Canadians born abroad.

A fugitive of Indian origin, Nicholas Singh, has been apprehended in Toronto after an 18-month evasion. Previously on Canada’s ‘most wanted list,’ Singh was serving a lengthy sentence for armed robbery and other offenses. Authorities discovered him with a firearm, leading to new charges including illegal possession of a regulated weapon.

Chief Justice Gavai said the court had ‘done its part’ by clearing the path for this reform, adding that the next steps must come from the government.
