Mumbai Police Register FIR Against Imran Khan and Others After August Kranti Maidan Protest

Mumbai Police have registered an FIR against actor Imran Khan, his girlfriend Lekha Washington and several others following their detention during a protest at August Kranti Maidan in Mumbai on Saturday, October 10. The protest was held in support of the Cockroach Janta Party’s (CJP) demonstration in Delhi, which called for the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. The FIR was registered at Gamdevi police station.
According to reports, the case has been registered under Sections 223, 126(2), 189(2), 189(3) and 189(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). These provisions relate to disobedience of an order issued by a public servant, wrongful restraint and offences associated with unlawful assembly. Police personnel filed the complaint following the gathering, which took place amid heightened security arrangements in the area.
As per reports, more than 400 people were detained during the protest, with some reports putting the figure at around 600 across Mumbai. Those detained included Imran, Lekha and Imran’s cousin, Zayn Marie Khan. They were released later that night. The police had barricaded roads around August Kranti Maidan and deployed personnel to prevent the gathering from proceeding.

Following his detention, Imran took to Instagram to share a selfie from inside a police van, captioning it, “Apparently I’m going for a drive.”
Lekha also shared updates on social media, saying she did not know where they were being taken after their detention. Following their release, she alleged that the police were not allowing them to return home or arrange a vehicle. She later reassured her followers that they were safe and heading home.

The Mumbai demonstration was held in solidarity with the CJP’s protest in Delhi, where demonstrators were also detained amid a major police operation. The movement has been demanding Gyanesh Kumar’s resignation over allegations concerning the revision of electoral rolls.

Editors Take: Amitabh Bachchan The Phenomenon That Endures

On Amitabh Bachchan’s birthday, Filmfare’s Editor-in-Chief, Jitesh Pillaai, reflects on the legacy of a megastar who gave voice to a generation and gifted Indian cinema some of its most unforgettable characters.

In his words:

Salim-Javed tapped into the pulse of a generation waiting to see real people in somewhat overdramatised situations, speaking and articulating their hopes and aspirations. And who better than Amitabh Bachchan to put voice to their words?

Editor's Take

Amitabh was the underdog, the bad guy, the good guy…the man on the other side of the law. In one of his most remembered double roles, Don (1978), which also earned him his Filmfare for Best Actor, Amitabh was at once suave and menacing, as he was naive and unpolished.

What can you say about this birthday boy that hasn’t been said already? He’s been referred to a sociological phenomenon, a wonderful human being, an enigma, a philanthropist, and above over a terrific actor.

Editor's Take

Amitabh Bachchan, you gave us hope, you moved us to tears, you made us laugh till our bellies ached. We love you for your stoicism, we love you for vigilantism, and we love you for your non-judgmental stance as an actor. Non-judgmental because, on screen, you walked on the not-so-mild side, you received your comeuppance, and that was okay too for you.

In your silence, we heard your words. And that’s why we teared up when we saw you grapple with your inner demons in Kaala Patthar (1979), Trishul (1978), Deewaar (1975) and Shakti (1982).

Editor's Take

It’s your desire to excel, your will to succeed and your inner quest that makes you on top of your game. Thank you for showing us time and again how it’s done correctly.

Editor's Take

He was able to get under your skin, and even if he did bad, he made you cheer for the bad guy as much as you did for his good guy. The ultimate mark of a fine actor. Empathy. You could empathise when Amitabh said “Don ko pakadna mushkil hi nahi, namumkin hai.”

Editor's Take

Thank you for the wonderful memories. On your birthday, here’s wishing you good health and cheer.
