Exclusive: I Like Roles Where The Woman Is a Psychopath – Priya Banerjee

Priya Banerjee has never been one to gravitate towards conventional female characters. The actress, who was seen in Candy and the Pizza Ggirl, says she is particularly fascinated by women who are flawed, unpredictable and layered. Speaking about her character in the film, Priya revealed that the story revolves around an unusual obsession.

She said, “The story is about my character who loves pizza. The whole movie is based on one night. She ends up meeting random people and tempts them to reach her goal, a pizza. She fakes being who she is.”

She added that the seemingly simple premise takes audiences on a surprising journey. “When you start watching the film, you realise that the character would do anything for a pizza. The extent of what she does for pizza is hilarious. The end is very sad though. Everyone is going to cry for me,” Priya shared.

For Priya, the appeal of the role lies in its eccentricity and unpredictability. The actress admits she has always been attracted to characters that break away from traditional stereotypes. “I love Pulp Fiction kind of roles. I love crazy roles. I love roles where the woman is an absolute psychopath. Those are fun to play. I have always been attracted to these roles with some character,” she said.

She also reflected on how her preferences as an actor have evolved over the years, particularly when it comes to portraying women on screen. “The roles where the girl is dancing and waiting to be saved by the hero does not work for me. I had done that initially when I had moved to India. Women have so many shades. I enjoy roles where women have the freedom to portray all the shades. I don’t want to play the mundane characters,” Priya added.

Mohanlal And Thudarum Team Remember Bharathiraja As Fans Revisit His Memorable Cameo

The passing of Bharathiraja has prompted an outpouring of grief from across the Indian film industry, with actors, filmmakers and fans remembering a storyteller whose work reshaped the landscape of Tamil cinema. Among those who paid tribute were Mohanlal and Tharun Moorthy, both of whom shared a special connection with the veteran filmmaker through the Malayalam blockbuster Thudarum.

Mohanlal Pays Tribute To A Filmmaker He Admired

Bharathiraja made a brief but memorable appearance in the film, playing Stunt Master Palani Swamy, the mentor of Mohanlal’s character, Benz Shanmugham. Though the role was not a lengthy one, it left a lasting impression on audiences and formed an important emotional thread within the narrative.

Remembering the experience of sharing screen space with the filmmaker, Mohanlal took to social media with an emotional note.

“A director who found poetry in the soil, truth in silence, and soul in every frame. Sharing screen space with Bharathiraja Sir in Thudarum was an honour I will cherish forever.”

The actor also reflected on the enduring influence Bharathiraja’s body of work continues to have on generations of filmmakers and cinephiles.

“Rest in peace, Sir. Your legacy will continue to inspire generations, and your presence will be deeply missed.”

For many viewers, the tribute immediately brought back memories of Bharathiraja’s appearance in Thudarum, a film that became one of the biggest Malayalam successes of the year and introduced a poignant mentor-disciple relationship at the heart of its story.

Tharun Moorthy Shares Memories From The Set

One of the most touching stretches in Thudarum sees Benz Shanmugham travelling to Tamil Nadu to reconnect with Palani Swamy. By then, Shanmugham has moved away from his former life as a stuntman and settled into a quieter existence as a car service provider. His meeting with his old mentor offers a glimpse into a chapter of his life that audiences had only heard about until that point.

The scenes are built on warmth, affection and mutual respect, making Bharathiraja’s presence feel far more significant than a conventional cameo. As the story unfolds, Palani Swamy’s role becomes an emotional touchstone for Shanmugham, strengthening the impact of the character’s journey.

The film also incorporates several nods to Tamil cinema and culture. In one notable sequence, Mohanlal’s character converses in Tamil with actor Ilavarasu, who appears as himself, while searching for information about his former stunt master. Bharathiraja and Ilavarasu serve as two important links connecting the narrative to Tamil cinema. The film’s admiration for Tamil cultural influences is also reflected in Shanmugham’s fondness for the music of Ilaiyaraaja, whose songs frequently feature in his world.

Director Tharun Moorthy also remembered Bharathiraja by sharing photographs from the sets of Thudarum. The behind-the-scenes images captured the filmmaker in a cheerful mood as he interacted with Mohanlal, Tharun and members of the crew during filming.

“Thank you, Master,” wrote the director alongside the photographs, adding a broken-heart emoji. He followed it up with another poignant message: “Memories Thudarum forever.”

The images have acquired an added layer of poignancy in hindsight. According to reports, Thudarum was filmed across an extensive schedule that began in April 2024 and spanned nearly 100 shooting days. In the year that followed, Bharathiraja reportedly battled health complications, including respiratory issues.

Today, his appearance in Thudarum stands as more than just a guest role. It serves as a reminder of a filmmaker whose influence crossed languages, industries and generations. For audiences revisiting the film, those scenes now carry a bittersweet quality, preserving one of the final on-screen appearances of a cinematic giant whose legacy will continue to endure.
