‘She Was Kind of Selfish’: Robin Wright Says Her Forrest Gump Character Was ‘Anti-Feminist’; DEETS Inside

Robin Wright, who played Jenny Curran in Forrest Gump, is finally addressing the controversy over her character. Wright, along with her co-star Tom Hanks, spoke with The New York Times while promoting their upcoming film Here. In the interview published on Friday, November 1, the actress admitted that she played “kind of an anti-feminist role” in Forrest Gump.

“No! It’s not about that. People have said she’s a Voldemort to Forrest. I wouldn’t choose that as a reference, but she was kind of selfish,” she added. Her character, Jenny, was Forrest Gump’s (Hanks) childhood best friend, who the title character remains in love with throughout the decade-spanning film.

They crossed paths multiple times in their adulthood and even had a child, yet she remained promiscuous and was eventually diagnosed with terminal illness. “I don’t think it’s a punishment that she gets AIDS. She was so promiscuous — that was the selfishness that she did to Forrest,” the actress explained.

He was in love with her from day one but she kept running away, indulging in drugs, or hooking up with a Black Panther instead of reciprocating. “And then she gets sick and says, ‘This is your child. But I’m dying,’” Wright added. The film concludes with the title character taking of Jenny until her death and Forrest taking their son to school.

Overlooking the anti-feminist aspect, the film narrates one of the “sweetest” on-screen love stories. It left a remarkable legacy, earned multiple accolades, including six Academy Awards, and gave credibility to its lead stars. Wright admitted that she’ll always feel sentimental about the film, not because it’s great but because it was a great experience working with the team.

Forrest Gump has crossed its 30-year mark, but its memorable lines like “Run, Forrest, run!” and “Life is like a box of chocolates” have become some of the most used pop culture references. The film’s leads and director, Robert Zemeckis, reunited for another film, Here, which aims to tell a story that spans most of history.

Here, a slice-of-a-life drama, is currently running in theaters.

Japan Makes Historic Arrests Over Anime and Movie Spoiler Site Violations

Japanese authorities have taken legal action against a website accused of sharing extensive spoilers of popular movies and anime. The Miyagi Prefectural Police, in collaboration with the Tome Police Station, recently arrested three individuals for allegedly violating copyright laws by publishing detailed spoilers of high-profile works, including Godzilla Minus One and the anime Overlord III, as per CODA. This marks Japan’s first legal case targeting individuals for transcribing copyrighted stories in a way that infringes upon intellectual property rights. The arrests have highlighted the severity with which Japan now treats spoiler-sharing sites, considering the damage they can inflict on creators and copyright holders.

Japan’s Content Overseas Distribution Association (CODA), which actively works to prevent unauthorized distribution of creative content, reported that the individuals, including a company manager from Tokyo’s Shibuya Ward, are accused of transcribing entire plotlines, character dialogues, actions, and other narrative details without permission. CODA’s statement explains that the website operated by the suspects included images from the copyrighted works and monetized the content through advertising, which they claim constitutes a serious breach of copyright law.

According to CODA, the website’s operators reportedly published detailed scene-by-scene descriptions that allegedly went beyond the permissible limits of content quoting and fair use. CODA’s statement emphasized that such spoilers decrease audience interest in purchasing or viewing the official releases, thereby causing significant revenue loss for rights holders. Unlike sites that offer illegal streams or downloads of movies and shows, these “spoiler sites” publish extensive summaries or scene-by-scene breakdowns, which CODA argues discourage viewers from engaging with the content through legitimate, paid channels.

The association pointed out that creating such content for ad revenue without compensating creators is not only unethical but constitutes a serious criminal offense. The crackdown on spoiler-sharing reflects Japan’s increasing focus on protecting the entertainment industry from copyright infringement. CODA has long raised concerns about the rise of unauthorized spoiler sites, arguing that they pose substantial risks to the financial viability of creative works.

With this case, Japan aims to set a precedent by demonstrating the legal consequences of unauthorized transcriptions and spoilers.
The arrests underscore Japan’s stringent stance on protecting intellectual property, even as global audiences continue to seek unofficial sources for anime and manga. As the industry grapples with challenges from piracy and unauthorized leaks, Japan’s legal actions may shape how spoilers are handled in other jurisdictions where similar content-sharing practices are also under scrutiny.

Hemant Soren Counters BJP’s Infiltration Allegation With Sheikh Hasina Jibe

The release of the BJP manifesto and Union minister Amit Shah’s comments on “infiltration” have drawn a sharp response from Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren. Mr Soren has pointed out that infiltration from Bangladesh takes place through BJP-ruled states and questioned on what basis the Centre has given asylum to former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

“I would like to know whether the BJP has some sort of internal understanding with Bangladesh,” he said today while addressing an election rally at Ranka in Garhwa Assembly seat.

“Please tell us on what basis you allowed the former Prime Minister of Bangladesh to land in India and seek asylum. Infiltrators from Bangladesh enter India through BJP-ruled states. They are saying it themselves,” he added.

Yesterday, while releasing the BJP manifesto, Amit Shah had accused the state of giving “shelter” to infiltrators.

“You have given shelter to infiltrators. You made infiltrators your votebank. Today I would like to inform the people of Jharkhand that by putting an end to appeasement politics, the BJP will drive out infiltrators and rebuild Jharkhand from scratch,” he had said.

Infiltration, though, is secondary to the big election issue that is expected to dominate the campaign – the BJP promise of implementing Uniform Civil Code, which has created a controversy in the tribal-dominated pockets of the state.

While releasing the BJP manifesto yesterday, Mr Shah had made it clear that the tribal population, with its diverse customs and practices, will be kept out of the purview of the Uniform Civil Code.

This has been sharply challenged by the Congress, a partner in the ruling alliance.

“If he is speaking in the capacity of the Union Home Minister then it is wrong. If he is speaking as a leader of the BJP then fine. They are habitual liars anyway,” said senior Congress leader Rajesh Thakur. “Why are you saying that tribals will be out of the purview of UCC? Because you have included them in the UCC,” he added.

The BJP’s “sankalp patra” for Jharkhand includes 25 resolutions to mark 25 years of the state’s formation.

Prominent among them is the welfare scheme for women “Gogo Didi” that promises Rs 2,100 per month to women to counter Jharkhand Mukti Morcha’s Maiyan Samman Yojana, under which they get Rs 1000 a month. The BJP has also promised free cooking gas during festivals and 5 lakh jobs for the young people in the state.
