Once relegated to schoolgirl aesthetics and gift-wrapping rituals, bows have staged a major fashion comeback! It is now seen as a statement piece across runways, award shows and red-carpet appearances. It is not a passé detail anymore, for bows today embody a playful yet elegant motif. Think nostalgia meets modern glamour. Fashion insiders describe the trend as a revival of feminine flair reimagined for the 2020s. Bows are not accessories anymore. They are sometimes required to tie a look together.
Why are bows trending now?
Bows have surged in popularity because they strike a balance between whimsy and high fashion. Designers and stylists are elevating a simple silhouette into something romantic and more expressive. Alia Bhatt recently shared her love for bows. She shared her Christmas looks in stylish bows of varied colours – of red, green and black. She flaunted both, oversized and dramatic and dainty and minimalist looking bows. Like, she paired a dainty red bow with her little black dress. A fashion moment right there! Her other outfits include pairing a black bow with a red fitted gown. She also paired a black and green silk dress with a dark green bow of the same material. Not only Alia, Sonam Kapoor Ahuja, Deepika Padukone and Khushi Kapoor have also paired a bow with a perfect dress before.

However, is the bow trend limited to Bollywood actresses and their styling sensibilities? Not really. Hailey Bieber continues wearing bows with dramatic and casual ensembles. Jennifer Lopez had attended the Elie Saab’s Spring/Summer 2024 Couture in 2024 with an ensemble that was completed by a thick forest green ribbon. Interestingly, she tied it in a small bow on the top of her side part. Other examples include Olivia Rodrigo, Millie Bobby Brown, Nicole Kidman and the list goes on and on.

Why does this trend work?
While discussing about the trend, we should know why it works and what it says about today’s fashion scene. The bow trend’s resurgence hints at a larger cultural moment.
