Shabana Azmi turns 75: When she won the Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award

Today marks a special day for one of Indian cinema’s most powerful actresses, Shabana Azmi, who celebrates her 75th birthday. It’s a perfect time to look back at one of her most memorable moments: her Lifetime Achievement Award at the 51st Filmfare Awards.

The year was 2006 when Shabana Azmi received the Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award. It wasn’t just an award, but it was a celebration of a career that had redefined acting in Bollywood. Her speech was heartfelt and honest, a moment where she spoke about her journey and the people who supported her. It was a beautiful moment that showed how much she meant to the film industry and her fans.

Shabana Azmi’s legacy goes far beyond just one award. She has been a legend, consistently choosing roles that were strong, real, and different from the usual. She is known for her work in what is called parallel cinema or art-house films, where she brought to life complex female characters that audiences had never seen before. Her debut film, Ankur (1974), showed her immense talent, and she went on to win four more National Film Awards for Best Actress for her work in films like Arth (1982), Khandhar (1984), and Paar (1984). In Arth, she played a woman who finds strength and independence after her husband leaves her, a role that was inspiring for many. She also showed her versatility in commercial cinema, proving she could do it all. Her work has always challenged what a heroine can be on screen, from a vulnerable village woman to a fierce activist.

Her work isn’t limited to just films. She is also a dedicated social activist, fighting for the rights of women and the underprivileged. She uses her voice and position to bring attention to important causes, making her a true role model both on and off screen.

We gear up for more such iconic moments of stars being honoured for their performance and contribution to Indian cinema, as the 70th Filmfare Awards is all set to give us a star-studded night at Ahmedabad on October 11, 2025.
