Grandson of MK Thyagaraja Bhagavathar Files Case Against Dulquer Salmaanâs Kaantha Before Release

The much-anticipated Dulquer Salmaan film Kaantha is now facing legal trouble days before its scheduled release. B Thiagarajan, the grandson of legendary actor and singer MK Thyagaraja Bhagavathar, has approached the Madras High Court seeking a permanent ban on the film’s release. He claims that the movie presents his grandfather as a man of questionable character who went blind and died in poverty, a portrayal he says is completely untrue.

Thiagarajan argues that his grandfather led an honourable life, was compassionate, followed strong moral values, and never consumed alcohol. He also asserts that the veteran actor lived and died with dignity, without any financial hardship. In his plea, Thiagarajan stated that the filmmakers did not obtain permission from the family, which he says is mandatory when depicting real historical figures.

Even if names are changed, he adds, the references are too close to ignore and could damage the late star’s reputation. The petition therefore requests the court to prohibit the release or exhibition of Kaantha in any medium if it contains references that tarnish the memory of MK Thyagaraja Bhagavathar.

According to recent reports, the Chennai City Seventh Assistant City Civil Court has issued notices to actor-producer Dulquer Salmaan, co-producer Rana Daggubati, and director Selvamani Selvaraj, asking them to file their replies by November 18. The petition will be taken up for further hearing once the responses are submitted.

The filmmakers’ stand and release plans

Kaantha is written and directed by Selvamani Selvaraj and stars Dulquer Salmaan in the lead. The film also features Samuthirakani, Bhagyashri Borse, and Rana Daggubati in key roles. Produced by Dulquer’s Wayfarer Films and Rana’s Spirit Media, the movie is one of the most talked-about Tamil releases of the season.

The filmmakers have responded to the controversy by stating that Kaantha is entirely a work of fiction. They maintain that the film does not depict any real-life personality and that any resemblance is purely coincidental. Producer Rana Daggubati has also reportedly confirmed that the release plans remain unchanged and that the team intends to go ahead with the film’s premiere on November 14.

Adding to that, Kaantha has successfully cleared censor board formalities and has received a U/A certificate, signalling that it is ready for theatrical release. Despite the ongoing case, theatres across Tamil Nadu are said to be gearing up for the launch, with advance bookings expected to open soon. Industry observers note that while the legal challenge has not yet halted the film, the outcome of the court’s next hearing could determine whether the movie’s run will face further complications.

MK Thyagaraja Bhagavathar, widely regarded as the first superstar of Tamil cinema, achieved fame in the 1930s and 1940s through hits like Haridas and Ambikapathy. His legacy as a pioneering performer continues to influence Tamil cinema, and his family insists that it will safeguard his image from any misrepresentation.

As the court proceedings continue, the fate of Kaantha now lies in the hands of the judiciary. For Dulquer Salmaan, who has also produced the film, this legal battle comes at a critical moment as he prepares to showcase one of his most ambitious projects to date.
