Zoya Akhtar talks about importance of consensual intimacy on-screen; says ‘Grew up at a time where women were…’

Zoya Akhtar made her directorial debut with Luck By Chance in 2009, headlined by her brother, actor-filmmaker Farhan Akhtar. After helming the 2009 film including other movies like Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara, Gully Boy, and The Archies, Zoya carved a niche for herself in the Hindi film industry. The ZNMD director recently opened up about the importance of consensual intimacy on-screen by saying that she grew up when women characters were “bullied” and “beaten” up in films.

In the latest session of Expresso of Indian Express, Zoya Akhtar shed light on censorship in cinema while arguing that physical intimacy shouldn’t be censored. Zoya also discussed how important it is to showcase consensual intimacy in films and web series.

“I grew up at a time where women were bullied, beaten up, harassed and sexually assaulted on screen. All these were allowed, but you couldn’t see a kiss,” Zoya said. The filmmaker added that the audience should be able to watch love, tenderness, and physical intimacy between two adults.

Zoya’s father, veteran screenwriter-lyricist Javed Akhtar presented his perspective to the discussion. Javed highlighted the psyche behind representing a love scene while saying that showing a love scene to “titillate” and evoke “genuine romance and empathy” is quite different.

Recalling his experience, the Deewar screenwriter shared that he doesn’t use “four-letter cuss words” during anger. However, when he watched it being delivered on-screen in Bandit Queen, he didn’t mind as it was not intended to “shock or titillate” the audience.

In Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara, Katrina Kaif’s character Laila kisses Arjun (played by Hrithik Roshan) during his road trip with friends, Kabir Dewan (Abhay Deol) and Imraan Qureshi (Farhan Akhtar). Zoya’s other notable works include Dil Dhadakne Do, Lust Stories, Ghost Stories, Talaash: The Answer Lies Within, Kho Gaye Hum Kahan, and more.

Zoya appeared in Namrata Rao’s docu-series, Angry Young Men. The series was based on the lives of Salim-Javed, the iconic screenwriter duo who ruled the 1970s in Hindi cinema. The series premiered on Amazon Prime Video on August 20, 2024. It also featured Salman Khan, Amitabh Bachchan, and Jaya Bachchan.

EXCLUSIVE: Cynthia Addai-Robinson Discusses Tar-Miriel’s Character Arc In The Lord Of The Rings: The Rings Of Power S2; ‘In For Some Surprises’

The highly anticipated second season of Amazon Prime’s hit series Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power is around the corner. The series, which focuses on Middle-Earth’s second age: the forging of the Rings of Power, had a warm reception after its first season, with an impressive 84% review score on Rotten Tomatoes. But what can fans expect from season 2?

In an exclusive interview with Pinkvilla, Cynthia Addai-Robinson, who plays King Tar-Palantir’s daughter and heir (now Queen) of Númenor, Tar-Míriel, spoke about her character’s arc in the upcoming season.

“She definitely starts from a place of loss,” Addai-Robinson revealed. After the events of the first season, Tar-Míriel lost a major battle and her father, The King with it. According to the actress, her character’s leadership is already questioned by the Númenorians in the wake of the tragic events.

“She’s lost her father, The King. She’s lost her vision. She’s lost an epic battle and in turn lost many of her fellow Númenorians,” the Texas Rising actress said. So by the time returns to her Kingdom, the people are “upset with her.”

“There’s uncertainty around her leadership even though that is meant to be her rightful place,” she added. With opportunists lurking around her, Tar-Míriel must rise to the occasion and navigate everything that’s going on. Addai-Robinson wishes that the audience is rooting for her “because she is definitely going to be tested and hopefully in the end be triumphant.”

She also teased that the season will delve deeper into the characters only “introduced” in the first one. Fans will go on a journey with these characters and be invested in their fates. “They are in for some surprises,” she teased.

The epic series is set thousands of years before the events of J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings and follows the origin story of the power rings and the downfall of the Númenor empire.

The Lord Of The Rings: The Rings Of Power season 2 will be released on August 29.

Mumbai Property Dealer Gives Contract To Kill Friend. Then, A Plot Twist

Contract Killing and then a miscalculation leading to a second death – these were what tied an abandoned car found near Mumbai and two missing property dealers, the Maharashtra Police have found. The men in question – property dealers Aamir Khanzada and Sumit Jain – have been missing since August 21. But the police had no clue till the Baleno car was found near Mumbai Pune Expressway two days later.

Deepak Sakore, a senior police officer of Navi Mumbai, said the they found bullet marks, two empty cartridges and blood inside the car.

The breakthrough came when they arrested Vitthal Nakade, who was linked to the contract killer.

Mr Sakore said Vitthal Nakade was a friend of Sumit. Amir Khanzada and Sumit Jain, the police found, were friends and business partners who had fallen out over a land deal. Both were residents of Nerul and were missing since the night of August 21.

“Recently, Sumit Jain, who  had incurred massive debts, usurped a plot of land through fraud. Aamir was blackmailing him to get a share. So Sumit hired a contract killer to kill Aamir,” he said.  It appeared that the entire planning was done by Sumit Jain and Vitthal Nakade in a day or two. The contract killer was given Rs. 50 lakh, the police were told by Nakade.

But then came the big twist. Instead of the body of Aamir Khanzada, the police found the body of Sumit Jain. The big question then became who killed Sumit and the whereabouts of Aamir.

The next big revelation came when the police arrested a few more men connected to Vitthal Nakade.

“On the night of August 21, at 11 pm, Sumit Jain and Vitthal Nakhade had got Aamir Khanzada in the car. They shot Aamir and disposed of his body. Then Sumit got himself shot in the leg – the plan was to make himself incapacitated, so he stays out of suspicion,” said Mr Sakore.

What marred the script was an unexpected fight between the two killers. Sumit, unable to get medical help in time, died of excessive bleeding. Nakhade disposed of his body too.

Amir Khanzada’s body was found near Karnala Bird Sanctuary. Sumit Jain’s body was dumped by the roadside on Pen-Khopoli Road.
