Doctor on the Edge

The story follows Do Ji-ui, a plastic surgeon who leaves his university hospital job to complete his mandatory military service as a public health doctor. Hoping to avoid the sea due to past trauma, he is instead assigned to the remote island village of Pyeongdong-do, a place most doctors avoid. There, he meets nurse Yook Ha-ri, a former university hospital nurse with secrets of her own. As Ji-ui treats the island’s residents, their stories slowly change his outlook on life and compassion. It was released on June 1 on Disney+.

Teach You a Lesson

Director: Hong Jong-chan

Cast: Kim Mu-yeol, Lee Sung-min, Jin Ki-joo, and Pyo Ji-hoon

As the title suggests, Teach You a Lesson follows a system where troubled students are disciplined by any means necessary. With campus violence spiralling out of control, the South Korean government creates the Educational Rights Protection Agency (ERPA), allowing the use of physical force and psychological pressure to restore order in schools. The story centres on ERPA supervisor Na Hwa-jin, who is sent to different educational institutions to break down violent student hierarchies and expose corruption within the administration. Alongside investigator Im Han-rim, Hwa-jin uses his state-backed authority to take on school gangs and bring discipline back to the system.

This action school drama will be released on Netflix on June 5.

See You at Work Tomorrow!

Director: Jo Eun-sol

Cast: Seo In-guk, Park Ji-hyun, and Kang Mi-na

The story follows Cha Ji-yoon, an employee at Saeum Electronics, whose life takes a turn when she begins working under Kang Si-woo, a manager known for his strict discipline and rigid approach to rules. As the two continue working together, their professional relationship gradually evolves while they also navigate the personal struggles and challenges faced by those around them. See You at Work Tomorrow! will be released on Amazon Prime Video on June 22.

Agent Kim Reactivated

Director: Lee Seung-young and Lee So-eun

Cast: So Ji-sub, Choi Dae-hoon, Yoon Kyung-ho, Joo Sang-wook, Son Na-eun

The story follows former secret agent Kim Do-hyeon, also known as Manager Kim, whose quiet life is shattered when his daughter is kidnapped. Forced to step back into the dangerous world he left behind, Kim’s return soon catches the attention of Kang Guk-cheol, director of the National Special Missions Bureau, who is assigned to track him down. Agent Kim Reactivated will be rleased on SBS TV on June 26. The streaming platform is yet to be announced.

This story follows Heo Mun-oh, a Korean literature professor and failed novelist whose passion for writing faded long ago. His dull routine changes when he discovers the extraordinary talent of Lee Kang, a quiet engineering student sitting at the back of his class. As Mun-oh begins mentoring him through private writing lessons, admiration slowly turns into obsession, pulling him into a dangerous emotional spiral shaped by ambition, insecurity and desire. Notes from the Last Row will be released on Netflix on June 26.

Editors Take: Darlingji The Untold Story of Nargis Love Loss and Legacy

On Nargis’ birth anniversary, Filmfare’s Editor-in-Chief Jitesh Pillaai revisits Darlingji, Kishwar Desai’s intimate portrait of Nargis, the iconic star whose journey through fame, heartbreak and love remains as compelling as ever.

In his words:

That Nargis was the most consummate artist of all times is well established. Darlingji is a terrific book by Kishwar Desai. Like all other child stars of her ilk, Meena Kumari and Madhubala, Nargis too was pushed into movies by financial compunctions, though she was the daughter of the legendary chanteuse Jaddanbai.

The book also traces the life and times of Nargis’s grandmother, who was Hindu and converted later. Nargis’s fraught and combative relationship with her stepbrother Akhtar is described evocatively. A piqued Akhtar often beat her up when she threatened to stop working in the movies.

His own film Raat Aur Din (1967), was released ten years after it was launched.

Despite her standout performances in Mother India, Raat Aur Din, Adalat (1958), Andaz (1949), Lajwanti (1958), she wore her stardom lightly and sometimes too casually.

It’s almost as if she’s trying to placate a struggling Sunil Dutt by dismissing her achievements. She was particularly disdainful of the legendary Mehboob Khan’s attempt to conceal the fact that she was dating Dutt because it would hamper Mother India or KA Abbas’s attempt at a reconciliation between her and Raj Kapoor when she was shooting for Abbas’ Pardesi (1957) in Russia.

Darlingji is peppered with many anecdotes, all told in a vivid style while placing it in the backdrop of all the ferment India went through pre and post-partition.

The book really picks up when we reach the Nargis-Sunil Dutt love story which began on the sets of Mother India (1957). Nargis’ honesty in her letters to Dutt, be it her 9-year-old relationship with Raj Kapoor, her mother’s past life or her own attempts at suicide following heartache, is chronicled with feeling and sensitivity.

Nargis’ struggle with cancer at Sloanne Kettering is heartbreaking too.

What ultimately stays is the tenderness and love of a couple who braved all storms together. The author succeeds in creating a portrait of a vulnerable and sometimes broken artist who found real love at the right time. Fact is sometimes sharper yet sweeter than the fiction on screen. This book is a gentle reminder of that.
