‘It Gets Harder And Harder To Write Science Fiction’: James Cameron Addresses The Challenges Of Sci-fi Genre

James Cameron, who’s been a bit busy making Avatar sequels lately, has hit some major roadblocks when attempting to get Terminator 7 off the ground. While he is committed to filming the Avatar sequels now, it’s now known that Cameron himself is writing the script for the seventh Terminator film. His history with the franchise is legendary, having directed both The Terminator and Terminator 2: Judgment Day, which have become science fiction staples. Following these successes, Cameron backed away from the franchise, finally returning as producer for the most recent offering, Terminator: Dark Fate.

It was in a recent interview with The Guardian that Cameron talked about how he saw the landscape of science-fiction evolve since the early Terminator films. Much of this change he attributes to the rapid development of real-world technology, saying it has changed so much in only a couple of decades. Cameron said that, in a way, some of his earlier work within the genre probably hasn’t held up to changes brought about by technology, but elements of it still do. What he has to do now is come up with a story for Terminator 7 that will resonate in today’s world, which is changing at breakneck speed.

Cameron’s comments drive home the challenges associated with attempting to write science fiction in an age in which, often, reality outpaces even the most vivid imagination. He continued to express himself, saying, “People pay the compliment, ‘Oh, it still holds up.’ I actually think that’s true of Terminator 2 qualitatively. I think Terminator 1 qualitatively is pretty obsolete, although story-wise it’s still pretty intriguing. There’s some interest around this idea that it was a bit prescient on certain things, like the emergence of AI, the potential existential threat of AI, which is transforming our world before our eyes.”

He said that the reason why it’s hard to come up with a good storyline for Terminator 7 is that today’s society is already living in what feels a lot like science fiction. “We’re at a point right now where it gets harder and harder to write science fiction because we’re living in a science fiction world on a day-to-day basis.” He’s working through some of the themes that he wants to bring into a new Terminator film or possibly even a kind of a reboot of a larger story framework, which is difficult right now because he wants to let the smoke clear on the whole thing. That’s going to be a ride that “we’re going to be watching for probably the rest of human history, but certainly the next few years are going to be quite telling.”

Even beyond science fiction, other genres, particularly political drama, and political satire, have increasingly found the real world leeching into storyline inspiration. Scandalfamously saw Shonda Rhimes having to cull storylines from her ever more heightened ABC series for hitting too close to home on real-life events, while Prime Video’s The Boyson several occasions has proven to be quite prescient, arguably to its own success, considering how heightened the satire is.

Cameron knows that even though his movies’ technology may date, there is something more fundamental, like an underlying theme and commentary, which holds promise for longevity. It is precisely this that lets Terminator 2 have some effectiveness even today. As Cameron works to bring to life Terminator 7, he shall surely turn his attention to these timeless elements, ensuring that the film remains relevant to whatever gets made obsolete very fast with successive technological advancement. Although the Avatar franchise is going to keep him busy for many years to come, anticipation for Terminator 7 is building up since fans would like to see what new ideas Cameron will bring into the series.

Diary Found Near Kolkata Doctor’s Body Had Gold Medal, Top Hospitals’ Dream

The young doctor whose life was brutally cut short at RG Kar Hospital less than two weeks ago, harboured big dreams of winning a gold medal and other big honours in medicine. She had even listed the hospitals she wanted to work in. All this, sources said, were on a torn diary that was found near her body.  The Central Bureau of Investigation, which is handling the case, is currently in possession of the diary and is consulting handwriting experts to confirm if the 31-year-old had written it.

The woman’s parents had confirmed that she was in the habit of keeping a diary. It was found near her body on August 9 in the seminar room where she was raped and murdered.

Sources said some of the pages of the diary have been ripped out. What remained is an account of her dreams, her likes and dislikes, her love for her parents.

“The deceased wanted to become a big doctor. She wanted to get a gold medal and win big honours in the medical field… She had wanted to study for her MD,” a source told NDTV.

“The names of some hospitals were mentioned, where she dreamed of working one day… There was also mention of her wish to keep her parents happy,” he added.

The woman’s parents had mentioned that she had been depressed about her work and study situation. She had expressed doubts about whether she would be allowed to pass — comments that had dovetailed with the allegations of irregularities at the medical college under the stewardship of Sandip Ghosh, who is now facing an inquiry from the state police.

The former Principal is also being questioned by the CBI — today was the fifth day he was seen visiting the offices of the agency.

The rape-murder case and the massive churn it triggered in the medical community, has now reached the Supreme Court, which took up the matter on its own and held a hearing yesterday.

The top court has proposed a national protocol for doctors’ safety and also requested the protesters to get back to work. The doctors have made it clear that they are not ready to relent till their demands are met.

In KTR vs Telangana Government, A Farmhouse Is Latest Flashpoint

A farmhouse has become the latest flashpoint between the Telangana government and former state minister and Bharat Rashtra Samithi working president Kalvakuntla Taraka Rama Rao, commonly known as KTR.

The Janwada farmhouse – allegedly constructed illegally in a preserved area – could be bulldozed as the Telangana High Court has rejected the plea of realtor Pratap Reddy Badvelu to stay its demolition by the Hyderabad Disaster Response and Assets Monitoring and Protection Agency (HYDRAA).

HYDRAA was recently introduced by the Congress government in Telangana. Revanth Reddy has claimed for years now that the property was actually owned by KTR but it is in the name of his benami, Pradeep Reddy.

KT Rama Rao has denied the allegation in court and outside too.

Addressing the media today, KTR said he did not own any farmhouse and dared HYDRAA to act against Congress ministers and leaders: “The farmhouse belongs to my friend. I took it on lease eight months ago. If it is in the Full Tank Level (FTL) or buffer zone, I will accompany you to demolish it. I welcome demolishing it.”

He said action should also be taken against the farmhouses owned by prominent Congress leaders, which are allegedly built in FTLs or buffer zones. “HYDRAA does not have the guts to demolish the farms of big Congress leaders built in lakes,” KTR stated, listing out several high-profile names.

KTR pointed to the farmhouses of Minister Ponguleti Srinivas Reddy, KVP Ramachandra Rao, MLC Patnam Mahender Reddy, Council Chairman Gutta Sukhender Reddy, and Congress leader Madhu Yashki, all allegedly constructed in similar zones under FTL.

He further dismissed HYDRAA’s enforcement efforts, mockingly referring to the agency as “hydra or amoeba.”

In April 2022, Revanth Reddy – who was then a Congress MP – had filed a petition with the National Green Tribunal (NGT), alleging that the farmhouse was illegally located in the GO 111 area, which is part of the protected Osman Sagar and Himayat Sagar reservoirs.

A case was filed at that time against Revanth Reddy for allegedly flying a drone over the farmhouse and filming videos that were subsequently posted on social media.

The NGT had ordered the formation of a joint committee to inspect the site and submit a report. In response, Pradeep Reddy filed an appeal in the High Court, asserting that his constructions were legal.

KTR also filed a petition in the High Court, denying ownership of the farmhouse and requesting the court to set aside the NGT’s orders.

The High Court had earlier granted an interim stay on the NGT’s orders.

With the formation of HYDRAA, which is tasked with removing encroachments and illegal constructions in the GO 111 area, Pradeep Reddy once again approached the High Court. He argued that his farmhouse was being falsely linked to a politician and expressed concern that the government might demolish it with ulterior motives. He made the HYDRAA commissioner a respondent in his petition.

HYDRAA was established for planning, organising, coordinating and implementing the measures for preparedness and prevention of urban disasters, for coordination with other state and national agencies for prompt response and rescue operations in any disaster situation or disaster that may arise in the region.

The Chief Minister is the chairman of the governing body, which has ministers for Municipal Administration and Urban Development, Revenue and Disaster Management, in charge ministers of Hyderabad, Rangareddy, Sangareddy, and Medchal Malkajgiri districts, the Greater Hyderabad Mayor, the Director General of Police and other higher officials as members.
