The Devil Wears Kolhapuri Sandals: Prada Spotlights Indian Craftsmanship

Prada has launched its limited-edition sandals, inspired by traditional Kolhapuri sandals from India. This development comes after a year of the luxury brand facing criticism for debuting their Kolhapuri-like sandals at Milan Fashion Week.

The brand has commented on the new limited-edition sandals. They are of the opinion that the sandals have been manufactured in India by artisans from the states of Maharashtra and Karnataka. While they were previously calling the footwear “leather sandals,” they now seem to have acknowledged the Indian roots of the footwear.

The sandals are priced at Rs 83,193 per pair and being sold across 40 Prada stores globally. Internet-savvy fashion lovers can also buy it online. The brand has also mentioned that the footwear “combines traditional techniques with contemporary design and premium materials.” They have described it as “a dialogue between Indian heritage and modern luxury expression.”

Prada also unveiled a three-year training initiative aimed at artisans from eight districts across India known for crafting Kolhapuri sandals. Two Indian design institutes are helping Prada develop this programme with six-month modules. The programme will train 180 artisans. The brand will also offer some artisans to be trained in the Prada Group Academy in Italy.

The history behind Kolhapuri sandals

Kolhapuri sandals were designed by the Saudagar family during the 1920s. The first model was thinner. They were known as Chappal with ears or Kanwali. They came with two side flaps and a perfectly designed upper portion.

Their open-toed or T-strap designs made them quite popular among Maharashtrians. The traditional designs were named after the place where it was made. The names included Kachkadi, Bakkalnali and Pukari.

The best part about the sandals is that they aren’t season specific. They can be worn during both winter and summer. The best Kolhapuri chappals are crafted with pure leather. However, some sandals also use processed leather.
