Jana Nayagan Censor Row Heads for Final Verdict on January 27

The long-running censor controversy surrounding Jana Nayagan is set to reach a decisive moment on January 27, when the Madras High Court delivers its verdict on the writ appeal filed by the Central Board of Film Certification. The division bench led by Chief Justice Manindra Mohan Shrivastava and Justice G Arul Murugan will pronounce its judgement following the board’s challenge to an earlier single judge order that had directed the film to be granted a U-A 16+ certificate.

Directed by H Vinoth, Jana Nayagan is widely seen as one of the most high-profile Tamil films of recent years, not just for its scale and cast but also because it marks Vijay’s final film outing before he enters full-time politics. The action drama has been in censor-related limbo since December 2025, a delay that forced the makers to push back its originally announced January 9 release.

High Court to decide fate of Vijay’s swan song

At the heart of the dispute lies the CBFC’s decision to send the film to a revising committee after an initial examination. The move triggered legal action from the producers, who argued that the board was unnecessarily delaying the certification process. Justice P T Asha of the Madras High Court, sitting as a single judge, had on January 9 ordered that the film be issued a U-A 16+ certificate. The CBFC, however, immediately filed an urgent appeal before the division bench, leading to a stay on the single bench order and pushing the matter back into judicial scrutiny.

With the court now having reserved its judgement after detailed arguments, all eyes are on January 27, which will determine whether Jana Nayagan finally gets a green light or continues to face uncertainty.

CBFC says 14 cuts are not final

During the most recent hearing on January 20, Additional Solicitor General A R L Sundaresan, appearing on behalf of the CBFC, told the court that the examining committee’s suggestion to remove 14 portions from the film should not be treated as a final verdict. He described it as merely an “intermediary step” in the larger certification process and stressed that the CBFC chairperson had yet to take a final call on the matter.

Sundaresan went on to explain the sequence of events under the Cinematograph Act. According to him, the producers were officially informed on January 6 that the film was being referred to a revising committee, even though earlier communication had created the impression that the board had already reached a conclusion. He added that the CBFC was not given sufficient time to file a counter affidavit when the matter came up before Justice P T Asha the very next day, on January 7.

The decision to send Jana Nayagan for revision, Sundaresan said, stemmed from a complaint raised by a member of the advisory committee who had initially viewed the film. That complaint flagged issues including the alleged misrepresentation of certain religious sentiments and the use of armed forces logos without what was claimed to be proper consultation.

The bench also sought clarity on the origin of the communication that referred the film to a revising committee. During the hearing, Chief Justice Shrivastava asked whether the decision had come from the CBFC’s Chennai regional office or its Mumbai headquarters. The court was informed that the message had originated from the board’s Mumbai office.

Sundaresan further questioned the producers’ claim that Jana Nayagan had been made on a budget of ₹500 crore, suggesting that announcing a release date even before the certification process was completed was a risky and questionable move. He reiterated that the board was still in the process of arriving at a final decision and that the 14 suggested cuts were not binding until the chairperson approved them.

After hearing arguments from both sides, the Madras High Court reserved its judgement, setting the stage for a crucial ruling that will decide whether Vijay’s last film before politics can finally move forward.

Beyond the courtroom drama, Jana Nayagan continues to carry enormous industry and fan interest. The film stars an ensemble cast that includes Mamitha Baiju, Bobby Deol, Gautham Vasudev Menon, Prakash Raj, Priyamani, Pooja Hegde, Narain, and others. On the technical front, the film boasts Anirudh as music composer, Sathyan Sooryan as cinematographer and Pradeep E Ragav as editor. It is co-produced by Jagadish Palanisamy and Lohith N K.

With its political undertones and the weight of Vijay’s impending transition into public life, the film has become more than just another big-budget release. The High Court’s verdict on January 27 will therefore not only decide the immediate fate of Jana Nayagan but could also set an important precedent for how certification disputes involving high-profile films are handled in the future.
