Soft land on Moon – Done. Mission to Sun – Done. Test flight for Gaganyaan (India’s first manned spaceflight) – Done. Next up – Venus and Mars.  India’s space research agency – ISRO – has set its sights on Earth’s planetary neighbours and expects to mark the country’s presence on Mars and Venus within five years, Dr M Sankaran, Director of the UR Rao Satellite Center in Bengaluru told NDTV on Sunday.

Dr Sankaran – who heads the the “powerhouse” unit behind the dozens of Indian satellites in orbit – identified some challenges, but revealed that internal talks on mission concepts are already underway.

Each comes with its own challenges, such as the spacecraft overheating on entry into Mars’ atmosphere and finding an optimum launch window for each mission. Then there are common logistical challenges, like developing launch vehicles capable of carrying heavier payloads – more fuel, more equipment, etc. – needed for missions to Mars, Venus or beyond.

“The past couple of years… we have been studying mission configurations for landing on Mars. There are two things that were holding us back. One was Chandrayaan-2’s unsuccessful landing, which slowed our confidence in sensors required for landing… it wasn’t that the sensors did not perform well, but since we could not achieve our final goal we were not sure if these were adequate. Now we know what can be done, we can move forward,” Dr Sankaran explained. 

“The second is about our ability to put higher mass into orbit. Now, with present LVM3 (Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle Mark III – the three-stage medium-lift launch vehicle developed by ISRO) capacity, still we have gap to meeting landing requirements because this is quite high. It has some challenges – in addition to a gravity field, like on the Moon, the atmosphere also poses a challenge. Heating (of the spacecraft) that occurs during entry into Mars’ atmosphere calls for additional thermal protection, which is again mass. (But) we are studying this…” he told NDTV.

It isn’t all doom and gloom though. Dr Sankaran said enhancements to the LVM3 are ongoing and that ISRO expects 20-30 per cent greater payload capacity within the next two years. This is crucial not only for India’s future space missions but also to allow the agency to carry more satellites for paid launches by other countries, which is a key revenue driver.

“I think we have now a possibility… with that as a target (about 20-30 per cent capacity increase in two-three years), we should be able to come up with a plan for a Mars lander mission. We have the outline.. now we need to move forward.”

The proposed Mars mission will be India’s second, after the success of Mangalyaan that was launched in November 2013; the country’s first Mars mission began orbiting the planet in September 2014 and send volumes of priceless data before ISRO lost contact with the module in October last year. The mission to Venus will be India’s first.

On the mission to Venus – unofficially dubbed Shukrayaan – Dr Sankaran had more good news to offer.

“We have actually gone up to preesenting internal reviews for concepts… this is going to be orbiter. Chandrayaan-3 success has given us confidence and the establishment also… so I think it should be possible, yes, to carry it forward,” he said.

“Mars and Venus missions have cyclical opportunities in terms of energy (use). We can launch any day… but depending on relative position of Earth and Sun, some year we get chance with minimum energy requirement. For Venus the next is in two years but that is too short, so may be in four to five years…”

In September ISRO chief S Somanath had confirmed the Venus mission had been configured and some payloads were under development. Speaking at an event, he also said ISRO is planning studies to analyse the climate of space.

Meanwhile, last week ISRO shared a remarkable update from the Aditya-L1 mission, which is India’s first attempt to study the Sun. The Hel1OS spectrometer – which was designed and built by Dr Sankaran’s UR Rao Satellite Center – captured the first high-energy X-ray glimpse of solar flares.

Billionaire Gautam Singhania on Monday announced separation from wife Nawaz, saying the two have decided to pursue different paths. Mr Singhania, 58, had married Nawaz Modi, daughter of solicitor Nadar Modi, in 1999.

“This Diwali is not going to be the same as many in the past,” Mr Singhania, chairman and managing director of textiles-to-real estate conglomerate Raymond Ltd, said in social media posts. 

“It is my belief that Nawaz and I will pursue different paths from here on.” He had married Nawaz, who was 29-years-old in 1999, after eight years of courtship.

“32 years of being together as a couple, growing as parents and always being a strength of each other… we traversed with commitment, resolve, faith as along came the two most beautiful additions in our lives,” he said.

He, however, did not give details of the separation and custody of their two children.

“As I reflect over the unfortunate developments in the recent past, there has been a lot of unsubstantiated rumour mongering, and gossip surrounding our lives fanned by ‘not so well wishers’,” he wrote. 

“I am parting ways with her while we continue to do what is the best for our two precious diamonds Niharika and Nisa.” He sought privacy and respect for personal decisions.

“Please respect this personal decision and kindly give us the space to settle all aspects of the relationship. Seeking your best wishes for the entire family during these times,” he added.

Minutes before announcing the separation, Gautam Singhania wrote on X about his group’s real estate arm continuing to expand its presence across Mumbai.

“We have secured 3 new real estate projects in the (Mumbai Metropolitan) Region, with a combined revenue potential of over Rs 5,000 crore (USD 678 million). Our realty business has seen a strong growth trajectory over the last couple of projects and we are confident of delivering on the highest level of quality and finesse associated with Raymond Group for the upcoming projects,” he said.

Mr Singhania was in news a couple of years back over a feud with his father Vijaypat.

Vijaypat Singhania created Raymond Group, which became a household name in India, producing apparels brands and textiles. His son, Guatam diversified the group into more sectors in an attempt to widen the revenue.

Just like father who was a noted aviator, flying commercial aircraft for free, Gautam Singhania too is known for his adventurous streaks, racing fast cars in circuits around the world. 

Model Arabella Chi was dragged from her car and attacked during a robbery, according to a report in Metro. The 32-year-old was travelling back from Ibiza to Barcelona with her father Paul when the attack took place. The robbers slashed the tyres of her car before the horrifying ordeal unfolded, the outlet further said. The police later told Ms Chi that she was targeted by an organised crime group. The incident comes weeks after the parents of Liverpool footballer Luis Diaz were kidnapped on the Colombian-Venezuelan border.

“Shortly after driving off the ferry, she had car issues with the two back wheels. Her dad realised both tyres had been slashed,” The Sun quoted people close to the model as saying.

“With only one spare, they decided Arabella would stay with the car as it was packed full of suitcases and her dad should get an Uber to go and get help,” the outlet added.

The gang targeted the car after noticing that Ms Arabella was alone inside it.

Ms Chi was “absolutely terrified” but she “screamed a fought back”, Metro said in its report.

The attackers were said to have got away with Ms Chi’s handbag, purse and passports, but she was able to save her phone.

The outlet also said that the thieves used high-tech device to unlock the model’s car. After the attackers left, Ms Chi called her father, who reached the spot with Spanish police officers.

Meanwhile, Ms Diaz’s father was released by ELN guerrilla group on Thursday, nearly two weeks after he was kidnapped. Luis Manuel Diaz told reporters that he went through a “very difficult” time, surviving “almost 12 days without sleep”.

His wife Cilenis Marulanda, who was taken by the same ELN kidnappers on October 28, was rescued hours later.
