The first day of the newly elected Jammu and Kashmir Assembly saw ruckus over an impromptu resolution – introduced by opposition MLA Wahid Parra of the People’s Democratic Party – against the scrapping of Article 370. The former state lost special status, and was bifurcated into two union territories, after the BJP-led centre’s contentious move in August 2019.

BJP’s lawmakers in the J&K Assembly today opposed Mr Parra’s resolution, and the Speaker, Rahim Rather of the ruling National Conference, said he had not admitted any resolution as yet.

The death count in the bus accident in Uttarakhand’s Almora district has climbed to 20. According to district authorities, the 45-seater passenger bus fell into a gorge at Marchula this morning while travelling from Garhwal to Kumaon.

The Jammu and Kashmir assembly elected Abdul Rahim Rather of the National Conference as its speaker in the first session after six years. Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and protem speaker Mubarak Gul congratulated Rather. The session will end on November 8, and key discussions include the L-G’s address and a Motion of Thanks.
