Beetlejuice 2 Star Winona Ryder Reveals Why Her Parents Refused To Relocate Her To Los Angeles As Child Artist: ‘It Didn’t Turn Out So…’

Winona Ryder recently recalled how her parents took great care to protect her when she began her career as a child actor. The Beetlejuice 2 star revealed that instead of relocating to Los Angeles, her parents used to drive from San Francisco to L.A. when she had to go for an audition. Read on further to know more details!

In an interview with AnOther Magazine, Winona Ryder talked about her early career beginnings and her latest dark fantasy comedy horror film Beetlejuice Beetlejuice. During her candid conversation with the publication, Ryder also recalled why her parents refused to relocate to Los Angeles. She shared that school was a priority in her family, and she had to “keep up grades” to be allowed to attend auditions when she was 13.

The Haunted Mansion actress explained that she wasn’t allowed to work if it conflicted with school, as her parents, whom she describes as her best friends, were “very wary of Hollywood. They associated it with (late actress) Judy Garland’s tragedy, and we never relocated there.”

Ryder said it turned out to be a “gift,” explaining that she had known many kids who had moved there to support their families, and it hadn’t turned out well. She had seen a lot of them experience burnout.

The actress further mentioned that she later had heard that she got a reputation for being very “choosy,” with projects noting, but the truth was that her family couldn’t afford to go for all the auditions.

However, when her hit 1988 classic Beetlejuice came along, she felt a connection, noting that the film caught her attention because the script was far more interesting than the other roles she had been considered for at the time, admitting, “Beetlejuice was so unusual – I zoned in on Lydia.”

The Black Swan actress mentioned that she had made her mom stay in the car because she wanted to go through the audition for this film alone. Ryder recalled she was waiting in a side office at the Culver City studio, and when a young man had come in, she assumed he was from the art department, and they started talking about “old movies and Edward Gorey’s art.”

She added that she asked him about when director Burton would show up and later found out it was him only, noting, “I had no idea directors could be like this cool young person. I said, ‘God, I’m sorry, do you want me to read?’ He said, ‘No, I want you to do it.’”

Winona Ryder and Tim Burton finally reunited for the Beetlejuice sequel decades later after the release of their original movie. Ryder has reprised her beloved character Lydia Deetz alongside her co-star Michael Keaton for this highly anticipated sequel.

Ahead Of Haryana Election, Congress, BJP Stutter Over Lists Of Candidates

The Congress and the BJP both face hiccups in finalising candidates for next month’s Haryana election, sources told NDTV Friday, days after the former began seat-sharing talks with the AAP, seeking a revival of the INDIA alliance that won five of 10 Lok Sabha seats in April-June.

As far as the Congress is concerned, as it was with seat-share talks with other opposition parties before the Lok Sabha election, there is disagreement between state and central leaders. Congress leaders in Haryana are unwilling to concede too many of Haryana’s 90 seats.

Differences have also emerged, sources said, over which seats the AAP can get; some of those identified by Arvind Kejriwal’s party are those to which the Congress’ influential former Chief Minister Bhupinder Hooda expects to nominate his loyalists.

The Congress and the AAP announced an ‘in-principle’ deal on Wednesday.

This was after Rahul Gandhi urged his party to form an alliance with the AAP to guard against the division of votes. Mr Gandhi has been clear that it will take a concerted effort by the opposition to defeat Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s BJP, whether in central or state elections.

In early exchanges the AAP wanted 10 seats but the Congress would offer five to seven only, with another likely to go to Akhilesh Yadav’s Samajwadi Party, another INDIA member.

In the 2024 Lok Sabha election in Haryana the Congress contested nine seats (and won five) and left the tenth to the AAP, but Mr Kejriwal’s party failed to wrest Kurukshetra from the BJP.

Sources said the Congress has pointed to this, and that wrestlers Vinesh Phogat and Bajrang Punia will contest on its tickets, to claim it has the best chance of defeating the BJP.

BJP’s Haryana Election Issues

The BJP, meanwhile, faces internal squabbles after naming a first list of 67 candidates, with Jails Minister Ranjit Chautala and MLA Lakshman Napa quitting after being denied tickets.

Mr Chautala has said he will contest as an independent candidate, while Mr Napa met Congress leader Hooda at his residence and said he would join that party.

Ranjit Chautala is the son of Devi Lal Chaudhary, one of the state’s tallest and most respected political leaders, who was also twice Chief Minister and served as Deputy Prime Minister.

Mr Chautala was hoping to contest from Rania – the seat he won in 2019 as an independent but quit to join the BJP and contest the Hisar Lok Sabha seat, which he lost.

The BJP fielded Shishpal Kamboj instead.

Meanwhile, Karan Dev Kamboj has resigned as chief of the BJP’s OBC Morcha state unit after also being denied a ticket. “Perhaps the BJP does not need loyalists anymore,” he said, taking a swipe at the party for giving tickets to former rival leaders who have recently joined the party.

When Is Haryana Election?

The Haryana Assembly election will be held on October 5.

The election was first scheduled for October 1 but it was deferred by the Election Commission to honour the voting rights and traditions of the Bishnoi community, for whom a festival – the centuries-old Asoj Amavasya festival in remembrance of Guru Jambeshwar – is on October 2.

The Bishnois represent a sizeable voting community in at least three districts of the state.

Therefore, results for the Haryana and Jammu and Kashmir elections – the first in the former state since 2014 – will now be announced on October 8 instead of October 4, the poll body said.

AAP In ‘Wait And Watch’ Mode As Congress Debates Haryana Polls Alliance

The Aam Aadmi Party is in ‘wait and watch’ mode, sources told NDTV Friday after disagreements with the Congress over seat-sharing for next month’s Haryana election. AAP sources said the talks are ‘on hold’ pending a decision by party boss Arvind Kejriwal and clarity from the Central Election Committee, the Congress’ highest-decision making body which meets this evening.

Getting word back from Mr Kejriwal, who in January insisted his party would contest all 90 seats in Haryana on its own – might take more time as the AAP boss remains in Delhi’s Tihar Jail in the alleged liquor excise policy case, and has limited access to communications.

The Supreme Court on Thursday reserved its verdict on his bail plea.

The two parties – both part of the INDIA bloc that united the opposition for the April-June general election, and delivered surprisingly strong results – reached an ‘in-principle deal on Wednesday.

This was after Rahul Gandhi urged his party to carry on the alliance, aware it will require a concerted effort to defeat the BJP in Haryana, a heartland state it has dominated since 2014.

However, early on there have been stumbling blocks.

AAP-Congress Seat-Share Talks

Sources have said the AAP wants to contest 10 of the state’s 90 Assembly seats.

The Congress, though, is unwilling to concede more than seven, pointing to its ally’s performance in the Lok Sabha election. The AAP contested one seat and lost, while the Congress contested nine and won five, preventing a second successive clean sweep by the BJP.

Nevertheless, a consolidation of AAP and Congress votes was pitched by Mr Gandhi as key to win back Haryana from the BJP, which claimed 47 of 90 Assembly seats in the 2019 poll.

But the Congress has since also onboarded wrestlers Vinesh Phogat and Bajrang Punia, both of whom will contest this election. Ms Phogat and Mr Punia’s star power will be expected to lend heft to the party’s bargaining position, and improve its standing among Jat voters in the state.

By some reports the Jats account for 20 to 25 per cent of the state’s population.

Congress-AAP seat-sharing has also stumbled over which seats will be given to the latter.

Sources said the AAP wants seats on former Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda’s turf, and which he was expecting to allot to loyalists. He told NDTV last month he had not spoken to the AAP’s state leaders since the general election, and that the alliance was not state-specific.

“The alliance we had was at the national levels. We have not spoken to them. Here the fight is between BJP and Congress,” he said.

Many others in the Congress have also demurred at handing over too many seats to the AAP, in a scenario very similar to that which delayed seat-sharing deals before the general election.

But overall, it is being seen as important the Congress, and the opposition, to continue momentum gained from the Lok Sabha poll, with statement performances, if not wins, in the four remaining state polls this year. The other three are Maharashtra, Jharkhand, and Jammu and Kashmir.
