10 Biopics We Love: From Rajkummar Raos Prahaar to Aamir Khanâs Dangal

While some stories are thought out by the visionary, some are crafted by the determination of real-life legends who just take no for an answer. Be it enduring all the challenges life throws at them, pushing through to become a national record holder, or ignoring the noise of the public and bringing reality to dreams.

That makes a biographical drama compelling is not simply the familiarity of its subject but the human story beneath the public image. A freedom fighter, a lawyer, a controversial figure, a prosecutor, or a sporting legend each brings a different set of challenges to the screen.

These stories have already been shaped by extraordinary ambition, personal sacrifice, public scrutiny, and moments that changed history. The true challenge now lies in bringing these inspiring stories to the masses.

Here are 10 biographical films and dramas that bring extraordinary lives to the screen.

1) Shahid (2013) – Rajkummar Rao as Shahid Azmi

Shahid was truly one of the defining performances in Rajkummar Rao’s illustrious career. Shahid tells the story of lawyer and human rights activist Shahid Azmi, who fought for the rights of people accused of terrorism. Rao’s portrayal not only earned him the National Film Award for Best Actor but also established his ability to carry a deeply affecting real-life story. The film yet remains a crucial watch to explore his talents as an actor.

2) M.S. Dhoni: The Untold Story (2016) – Sushant Singh Rajput as M.S. Dhoni

Sushant Singh Rajput brought the journey of former Indian cricket captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni to the screen. This coming-of-age tale traces the rise of M.S. Dhoni from his roots as a small-town boy to one of the most celebrated names in Indian sport. Beyond the trophies and landmark victories, the film explored the personal relationships, willing sacrifices, and defining choices behind his career. It remains one of Hindi cinema’s most recognisable sporting biopics.

3) Bose: Dead/Alive (2017) – Rajkummar Rao as Subhas Chandra Bose

Biopics to watch
Rajkummar Rao took on one of India’s most recognisable historical figures in Bose: Dead/Alive. The series explores the life of freedom fighter Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose and the mystery surrounding his disappearance. Playing a figure whose legacy still continues to command public interest came with its own set of risks and expectations. This historic role offered Rao yet another opportunity to step into a larger-than-life narrative.

4) Bhaag Milkha Bhaag (2013) – Farhan Akhtar as Milkha Singh

Biopics to watch
Farhan Akhtar made an impressively incredible physical transformation to portray the legendary Indian athlete Milkha Singh in this biographical sports drama. The film follows Singh’s journey through personal tragedy, relentless training, and the pursuit of sporting excellence, with an aspiration to make something of his name. The movie seamlessly captures his determination that made him one of India’s most celebrated athletes. Its emotional scale and focus on resilience helped make it a landmark in the Hindi biopic genre.

5) Aligarh (2015) – Rajkummar Rao as Deepu Sebastian

Biopics to watch
Aligarh is based on the real-life case of Aligarh Muslim University professor Shrinivas Ramchandra Siras. Aligarh examines privacy, discrimination, and the treatment of an individual whose personal life became a public controversy. Rajkummar Rao plays Deepu Sebastian, the journalist responsible for investigating Dr Shrinivas Ramchandra Siras’s (Manoj Bajpayee) case. It is a reminder that real-life stories can be just as powerful when told through the eyes of those who document them.

6) Dangal (2016) – Aamir Khan as Mahavir Singh Phogat

Biopics to watch
In Dangal, Aamir Khan played wrestler and coach Mahavir Singh Phogat, whose determination to train his daughters Geeta and Babita challenged entrenched expectations around women in sport. The movie made a constant effort to focus on not just the sporting aspect but also his family, discipline, and the relentless pursuit of opportunity. Dangal became a major commercial success and a widely discussed sports drama. Its enduring appeal lies in a story that goes beyond wrestling to examine ambition, sacrifice, and changing social attitudes.

7) Omerta (2018) – Rajkummar Rao as Ahmed Omar Saeed Sheikh

Biopics to watch
Not every real-life story celebrates a hero. In Omerta, Rao portrayed Ahmed Omar Saeed Sheikh, a British-born militant linked to several high-profile crimes. The unsettling biographical drama required him to inhabit a deeply disturbing real-life figure, making it one of the more challenging subjects in his filmography. The film also underlined how biographical cinema can examine troubling individuals without turning their lives into conventional tales of heroism.

8) Prahaar – The Ujjwal Nikam Story – Rajkummar Rao as Ujjwal Nikam

Biopics to watch
With Prahaar, Rajkummar Rao steps into the shoes of public prosecutor Ujjwal Nikam, who is known for handling several high-profile cases. One of the most infamous cases he had taken up was the trial of Ajmal Kasab following the dreadful 26/11 Mumbai attacks. We get to see Rao back in the courtroom, but this time in a sharply contrasting avatar compared to his portrayal of Shahid Azmi in Shahid. His transformation into Nikam adds another distinct real-life personality to a filmography that continues to span contrasting worlds.

9) Mary Kom (2014) – Priyanka Chopra Jonas as Mary Kom

This is not merely a tale about her sporting accomplishments but about a woman who endured through every obstacle and etched her name among the greats in a mostly male-dominated sport, boxing.

10) Trapped (2016) – Rajkummar Rao in a survival drama as Shaurya

Biopics to watch

While Trapped is not a biopic, it showcases another side of Rao’s ability to carry a story through the lens of a demanding, character-led performance. Playing a man locked inside an empty apartment with no food, water, or any means to escape, he anchors a tense survival drama with a physically and emotionally intense portrayal. It is included here as a reminder of the range Rajkummar Rao effortlessly manages to conjure on screen beyond just real-life roles.
