5 Netflix supporting characters so good that we wanted to see them longer in films

Supporting characters add more depth to a film’s plot and make it more interesting. Bollywood films often use supporting characters to add a new angle, such as comedy, friendship, or more. However, several characters have impressed us so much with their acting, role, or uniqueness that we wish we could have seen them more on-screen.

From Imran in Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara to Gopal in Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2, they didn’t just contribute to enhancing the plot but left such an impact that we wish to know more about their personality.

Top 5 supporting characters so good that we wish they had a longer screen time in the film

1. Imran (Farhan Akhtar) – Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara

IMDb Rating: 8.2/10
Cast: Hrithik Roshan, Farhan Akhtar, Abhay Deol, Katrina Kaif, Kalki Koechlin
Director: Zoya Akhtar
Release Date: July 15, 2011

In every group of friends there is a friend who is unique from the others, and Imran in Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara is one such character. Among Kabir and Arjun, Imran was a breath of freshness who has a good sense of humor, a playful personality,, and a a poetic approach.

Farhan played the role with complete conviction, and it resonated well with the film’s audiences. He adds a touch of lightheadedness in some serious scenes and is like that old childhood friend who hasn’t changed despite growing up. Imran’s deeper emotional truths make the film more than a road comedy-drama, and it would have been interesting to learn more about his backstory and life apart from his friends.

2. Sweetu (Delnaaz Irani) in Kal Ho Naa Ho

IMDb rating: 7.9/ 10
Cast: Shah Rukh Khan, Preity Zinta, Saif Ali Khan
Director: Nikkhil Advani
Release Date: November 28, 2003

One of the most adorable supporting characters is Sweetu from Kal Ho Naa Ho, played by Delnaaz Irani. She is quite a bubbly and fun-loving friend of Naina and adds humor to the film. Her carefree attitude and loyalty towards Naina make her the ideal friend we all want.

Sweetu has several heartfelt and funny interactions with other characters, giving her an impressive screen presence. However, she has limited screen time in the film, and we would have loved to know more about her story and see more of her vivacity.

3. Kamaljeet Kaur (Kirron Kher) – Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna

IMDb Rating: 6.0/10
Cast: Shah Rukh Khan, Rani Mukerji, Preity Zinta, Abhishek Bachchan, Amitabh Bachchan, Kirron Kher
Director: Karan Johar
Release Date: August 11, 2006

Bollywood never gets it wrong with the mother’s character, and Kamaljeet Kaur, played by Kirron Kher in Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna, is one of them. Despite the film’s complex storyline on extra-marital affairs, her role as a doting and humorous mother added balance to the serious film.

She brings warmth to the screen, and her Punjabi pride as a mother is highly relatable. However, she has limited scenes, and we would have loved to see more of Kamaljeet’s scenes where she takes the central role and makes the drama film less intense.

 4. Gopal (Rajpal Yadav) – Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2

IMDb Rating: 5.7/10
Cast: Kartik Aaryan, Kiara Advani, Tabu, Rajpal Yadav, Sanjay Mishra
Director: Anees Bazmee
Release Date: May 20, 2022

One of the most iconic supporting roles ever has been Gopal by Rajpal Yadav in the Bhool Bhulaiyaa series. His role in the second installment is more interesting, with unique expressions and quirky antics. As he becomes a constant companion of, Ruhaan, we love to see their banter on-screen.

Despite his short screen time, he leaves a lasting impression, and it’s difficult to stop laughing whenever he enters the screen. We hope he had more screen time where we could be more of his quirks or misadventures that would have added more fun to the film’s horror-comedy film.

5. Farah Ali (Anushka Sharma) in Dil Dhadakne Do

IMDb rating: 7.0/10
Cast: Shefali Shah, Priyanka Chopra, Anil Kapoor, Ranveer Singh
Director: Zoya Akhtar
Release date: June 5, 2015

Shefali Shah and Priyanka Chopra Jonas shine as the female leads in the film. But, we couldn’t get over the carefree and independent Farah Ali, played by the charismatic Anushka Sharma in the film. A dancer by profession, her upfront attitude, and ability to challenge high-society values and orthodox norms make her interesting.

Moreover, her chemistry with Kabir in the film and her ability to be herself and carry it confidently differ from those of the elite Mehra family. Her character enters late and leaves too soon. So, we would have to see more of her personality and fight to be an independent woman in the film.

Each of these supporting characters left an important mark in the film and added a charm to the film. Moreover, they enhanced the leads in the film, and we would have loved to see them more. Whether it was through their continued screen presence or exploring their backstories, the film would have created more magic on-screen.

Over 150 Injured In Massive Cracker Accident During Kerala Temple Festival

More than 150 people were injured, eight of them seriously, in a fireworks accident at a temple in Kerala’s Kasaragod district late last night. Shocking visuals from the spot showed crackers triggering a massive fire and a cloud of smoke as people gathered on the temple premises ran to safety.

According to local media reports, the incident took place at Anjootambalam Veerekavu during the celebration of the beginning of the Theyyam festival.

Eyewitnesses have said that a firecrackers display was on around midnight, and one of the crackers may have fallen into the nearby shed where more crackers were stored. Visuals showed people in the crowd shocked as the shed erupted into massive flames and smoke.

Priyesh was at the temple with his cousins for the festival. “It started with a loud blast, and then we saw a ball of fire. Soon, there was panic. There was so much crowd. Many people were standing by the side of the shed and since there were too many people, they couldn’t move around freely. We immediately started rushing people to nearby hospitals,” he said, according to Manorama Online report.

Sreerag, associated with the temple, came from Bengaluru to attend the festival. He was managing the crowd when he heard the explosion. “Usually we expect a big crowd on the festival’s second day. On Monday night, the crowd was unusually high.”

“Chinese crackers were stored in the shed. A spark from a flower cracker may have fallen into the shed, igniting the crackers,” he said.

Several local residents have told Manorama that the storehouse was near the place where crackers were burst. Panchayat representatives have blamed a lack of vigil. “Crackers are not burst on a large scale here. It is a small event. However, there should have been more precaution regarding the distance between the shed and the place where crackers were burst,” local ward member E Shajeer said, according to the Manorama Online report.

Mumbai BJP Leader’s Rebellion After Party Gives Ticket To “Outsider”

An assembly constituency in Mumbai saw the BJP workers protest against their own party after an “outsider” was fielded from there for the upcoming Maharashtra assembly election. Upset over the decision, senior BJP leader Gopal Shetty – a strong contender for the seat – announced that he will contest the election as an independent candidate.

“It is necessary to oppose this tradition of fielding candidates from outside, so I will fight as an independent candidate,” Mr Shetty told NDTV. “No matter what happens, I will not back down,” he added.

The BJP has fielded Mumbai unit general secretary Sanjay Upadhyay from Borivali replacing sitting legislator Sunil Rane.

“I was not interested in contesting this election. But my supporters told me about the gravity of the situation. First Vinod Tawde contested from here in 2014, then Sunil Rane in 2019. This time, the Lok Sabha ticket from Mumbai North was given to Piyush Goyal. This is happening for the fourth time with Upadhyay being nominated,” said Mr Setty. Sanjay Upadhyay is not a resident of Borivali.

Gopal Shetty said that he got to know about the move of his party through “a TV flash”. “I saw a TV flash that Sanjay Upadhyay got a BJP ticket from Borivali.”

Earlier, addressing the party workers and supporters he announced his decision to fight polls as an independent candidate, insisting that he still supported the ideologies and policies of the BJP. “The BJP workers feel I should contest from here. Even other parties feel I should contest. But people of Borivali have told me that if you don’t correct whatever has happened, no one will ever dare to stand up to the wrongs. So, I will fight this wrong decision. I am not against BJP’s policies or ideologies, I support the BJP and Devendra Fadnavis. But I will fight this decision.”

“So, I have decided to fill the form tomorrow and contest the election,” he added.

Mr Shetty also claimed that he was not informed before the announcement was made.”They didn’t ask me before taking this decision. At least have a discussion. This is an insult to Borivali workers,” a visibly disappointed Shetty said.

Many of his supporters, meanwhile, staged a sit-in protest against the party’s decision with many claiming that due to the move,  the BJP might end up losing the safe seat.

“He will win with a record margin. We don’t even know who Sanjay Upadhyay is. They have made Borivali a dharamshala (guesthouse),” said a BJP worker.

“Gopal Shetty should fight as an independent, he will win. BJP will lose this seat,” said another worker.

Mr Shetty was an MP in 2014 and 2019 but was denied a ticket from North Mumbai in this year’s general elections. The party gave the ticket to Union Minister Piyush Goyal instead.

The BJP has said that it will contest 146 of the total 288 seats, leaving four seats from its quota to allies including Yuva Swabhiman Party, Rashtriya Samaj Paksha, Republican Party of India (Athavale) and Jan Surajya Shakti Paksha. The remaining 138 seats are for Eknath Shinde’s Shiv Sena and Ajit Pawar’s NCP.

Maharashtra will vote on November 20 and the results will be declared on November 23.
