National Cinema Day Box Office: Stree 2 leads by a margin, followed by Yudhra, Tummbad and Navra Maza Navsacha 2

The National Cinema Day is here, inviting audiences to consume feature films on the big screen at the most affordable rates i.e. Rs 99 only. Like every year, the National Cinema Day has fetched a phenomenal response from the cine-goers, and as expected, the horror comedy, Stree 2 is continuing to run a one-horse race at the box office. As on Thursday at 2 PM, the Shraddha Kapoor and Rajkummar Rao film has sold approximately 1.20 Lakh tickets in the top 3 national chains – PVRInox and Cinepolis.

Stree 2 is headed to clock advance booking in the range of 2 Lakh tickets by mid-night for the National Cinema Day in top 3 multiplex chains, and is looking to collect in the north of Rs 5 crore, as subsidized ticket pricing is sure to draw a larger than usual section of audiences. The film will have another record in its name tomorrow – the biggest 6th Friday of all time – and will keep the film in the race to top the Rs 575 crore mark by the end of its run in Hindi.

Second to Stree 2 is the Siddhant Chaturvedi and Malvika Mohanan starrer Yudhra, which has sold around 60,000 tickets in the top three national chains at 2 PM on Thursday. The actioner directed by Ravi Udyawar will top the 1 lakh pre-sales mark by mid-night and aim at a start in the north of Rs 2 crore. Third in the list is the Sohum Shah-led Tumbbad, which is doing fantastic business in its re-releases.

The film has sold 48,000 tickets in the top 3 national chains, and could match up its pace with Yudhra, as there is a definite demand and excitement in the cine-goers to consume the film on the big screen. Navara Maza Navsacha 2, is also seeing good movement in advance booking, especially for a Marathi Film, with ticket sales in the vicinity of 26,000 in the national chains.

Another film called Kahan Shuru Kahan Katam releasing on Friday, and has sold 14,000 tickets as yet for the first day. All in all, we are headed to see a big day at the box office on September 20, and the eyes are now to see how fast the tickets move in the second half of Thursday, leading to the National Cinema Day.

“Completely Unwarranted”: India On US Court Summons Over Khalistani Terrorist

A US court’s summons to Indian government over Khalistani terrorist Gurpatwant Singh Pannun’s civil suit, alleging a plot to murder him, was “completely unwarranted”, Ministry of External Affairs has said.

In a news briefing this afternoon, MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal was asked about the summons by the US District Court for Southern District of New York.

“When these issues were first brought to our attention, we took action. There’s a high-level committee engaged,” Mr Jaiswal said.

Team Atishi To Retain Four Delhi Ministers, One Cabinet Addition Likely

Four ministers in the Arvind Kejriwal government will retain their posts as Atishi takes charge as Delhi’s new Chief Minister on Friday, sources have said. Ministers Saurabh Bharadwaj, Kailash Gahlot, Gopal Rai and Imran Hussain are likely to swear in again as the new Chief Minister takes over after Mr Kejriwal’s shock resignation Tuesday, sources said.

Dalit leader Mukesh Ahlawat, MLA from Sultan Pur Majra, may be sworn in as minister too. This would leave one ministerial post in Ms Atishi’s cabinet vacant. All the ministers will take the oath on Friday.

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) said in a statement today that Ms Atishi will take the oath on Friday. “Atishi will take oath as the Chief Minister of Delhi on September 21, other ministers will also take their oaths alongside her,” it said in a statement.

The 43-year-old MLA from Kalkaji, who has handled key portfolios in the Arvind Kejriwal government and is among the key faces of AAP, is being elevated as Chief Minister after Mr Kejriwal announced that he would resign and return to the top post only after the “people’s verdict” in the upcoming election in the national capital. The AAP convener made the shock announcement days after the Supreme Court granted him bail, six months after he was arrested in a corruption case linked to Delhi’s now-scrapped liquor policy.

Ms Atishi said she is happy with the trust Mr Kejriwal has shown in her. She said she will work to bring Mr Kejriwal back as Chief Minister.

“First of all, I would like to thank the popular CM of Delhi, AAP national convener, and my guru – Arvind Kejriwal. He gave me such a huge responsibility and trusted me for it. This can be done only in AAP, only under the leadership of Arvind Kejriwal, that a first-time politician becomes the CM of a state. I come from an ordinary family. Had I been in any other party, perhaps I would not have been given even an election ticket,” Atishi said.

Ms Atishi will be Delhi’s third woman chief minister of Delhi after Sushma Swaraj and Sheila Dikshit. An Oxford University alumnus and a Rhodes scholar, she has worked extensively in the AAP’s flagship exercise to overhaul education in Delhi’s schools.
