Police Tried To Destroy Evidence From Start: Kolkata Doctor’s Parents

The parents of the Kolkata doctor who was raped and killed last month, have accused the Kolkata Police of attempting to destroy evidence since the beginning of the case. Taking part in today’s massive protest march in Kolkata, the woman’s mother said, “The government, administration and the police have not cooperated with us since the beginning of the case”.

The police, she said, also tried to destroy the evidence “from the beginning”. “I request that mass protest should continue as long as we don’t get justice,” she added.

The woman’s father said the mass protests were bringing him hope that justice will be done. “I request everybody to stay with us. I know justice will not come so easily. We have to ensure justice. I hope that people will be with us since they are the main source of our strength,” he said.

The parents of the woman were part of the march held by the medical fraternity from Sealdah to Esplanade.

On September 4, the woman’s father had accused the police of deliberately delaying the registration of a First Information Report. He also claimed that a police officer had offered him money and tried to convince them to settle the matter.

He also accused another officer of Kolkata Police of deliberately trying to mislead people through incorrect media statements — even when the case has been handed over to the Central Bureau of Investigation or the CBI.

Earlier, they had also claimed that they had wanted to preserve their daughter’s body for a second postmortem, but were forced to cremate her.

“About 300-400 cops surrounded us. We returned home and found some 300 cops were standing outside. They created such a situation that we were forced to cremate her,” her father said, setting off a major political row. The Trinamool Congress said the political parties should leave the bereaved parents alone.

“There should have been no politics here. Political parties should not bother them,” said state minister Shashi Panja.

Tomorrow, the Supreme Court will hear the case it has taken up on its own, during which the CBI is expected to present its report. The case was also heard by the Calcutta High Court, which, following the appeal by the  parents, had handed the investigation to the CBI.

While the protests over the rape-murder have acquired a life of their own, the woman’s parents are closely associated with it, and appear on crucial days. The woman’s mother, who lost her only daughter, today said, “Now, all these protesters are all my children”.

Governor Directs Mamata Banerjee To Replace Kolkata Top Cop: Report

In the wake of the people’s uproar demanding justice for the deceased woman doctor, West Bengal Governor Dr CV Ananda Bose on Sunday directed CM Mamata Banerjee to hold an immediate emergency Cabinet meeting and discuss the issue, a Raj Bhavan source said.

Governor Bose has also stated that the state government should decide on the people’s demand to replace Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal.

“Governor Bose has directed Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to hold an emergency Cabinet meeting to discuss people’s demand for justice for the deceased woman doctor,” the source told PTI.

Governor Bose is on record that the government cannot evade responsibility and remain silent on the disturbing developments in the state, he said.

“According to the governor, the state should function within the Constitution and the rule of law. The ostrich-like attitude will not pay and the state must address the public demand to remove the Police Commissioner of Kolkata,” the source said.

The body of an on-duty trainee doctor, who was raped and murdered, was found in the seminar room of state-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9, triggering nationwide outrage.

Protests were held by common people daily in Kolkata and other parts of West Bengal.

‘I Don’t Want To Get Hung Up’: Ray Fisher Reveals How His Film The Piano Lesson Was A ‘Palette Cleanser’ After Career Hardships

Ray Fisher not only looked charming on screens in Netflix’s period drama The Piano Lesson but also delivered a performance that has sparked some early Oscar buzz. This film was a breath of fresh air for Fisher who was entangled in a ton of controversy over the last few years.

The actor who played cyborg in DC’s 2017 Justice League had a public dispute with film director Joss Whedon and former DC Films president Walter Hamada. But this project finally gave him the chance to move on.

During an interview at the Variety Studio, the actor revealed how he channelized his angst through his character on The Piano Lesson. “What helped this entire process is, I’ve got to give it up to August Wilson,” he said.

“The juxtaposition that existed within the piece, within the character. I think there’s a little of Lymon Jackson in all of us,” he added. Fisher explained how the innocence his character possesses, often found lacking in adults, was refreshing for him to play. “For me, it was a palate cleanser in many ways because I’ve endured specific hardships in my life and some career hardships,” he admitted.

This project helped him get to a place where he decided not to be hung up on the past and move on. “Being able to come back into this space and say, ‘I don’t want to get hung up on this” and to not feel resentful about everything that occurred and willingness to move on, is something his character represents.

Based on August Wilson’s eponymous book, the film revolves around the Charles family in 1936 who are deciding what to do with a precious ancestral heirloom—a piano. While some offer to sell for monetary gain, others fight to preserve their ancestral glory. According to the official synopsis, the themes of family legacy are explored in the film.

Apart from Fisher, Samuel L. Jackson, John David Washington, Danielle Brooks, Michael Potts and others are part of the star-studded ensemble. The Piano Lesson will be released theatrically on November 8 and will be available to stream on Netflix, November 22 onwards.
