Director-writer Deva Katta is now working on Dragon, the pan-Indian action drama directed by Prashanth Neel. He is reportedly writing specific scenes and dialogues for the film. This collaboration came together following a personal request from Jr NTR and Neel, who wanted the writing to feel raw, impactful, and emotionally charged.

Dragon dialogues to be impactful

The dialogues in Dragon are expected to be far more intense and layered than usual. Tarak personally chose Deva Katta to handle certain dramatic portions of the script. Deva Katta is widely respected for his hard-hitting storytelling style. His most celebrated directorial remains Prasthanam, which attained cult status for its philosophical dialogues and political themes. He has also directed notable films such as Vennela and Republic. His ability to craft sharp social commentary and emotionally charged dialogues makes him a strong fit for this mass action entertainer.

A source close to the production house shared, “Deva Katta is celebrated for his cerebral and dialogue-heavy writing style that focuses on intense drama and emotional depth. Jr NTR felt Deva’s crisp and sharp writing would add greater dramatic elevation to the story.” Dragon is currently scheduled to release worldwide on June 11, 2027. Rukmini Vasanth plays a pivotal role in the film, while Ravi Basrur is composing the music. Reports also suggest that certain script-related changes were made after the disappointing performance of War 2.

What may have prompted Jr NTR to bring Deva Katta onboard?

Deva Katta previously contributed dialogues to Baahubali: The Beginning. He is credited with writing the powerful “Yedhi Maranam” sequence, which became one of the most iconic moments in S. S. Rajamouli’s filmography. More recently, Rajamouli reportedly roped him in to work on dialogues for his upcoming globe-trotting adventure Varanasi starring Mahesh Babu. He is said to be involved in script doctoring and refining key sequences as the project progresses.

The trailer for Suriya’s Karuppu was unveiled on Sunday, shortly after actor-turned-politician Vijay was sworn in as Tamil Nadu’s chief minister. The makers appear to have waited for the political excitement to subside before launching fresh promotional material for Suriya’s 45th film, directed by RJ Balaji.

Is Karuppusamy walking among men?

While the teaser established that Suriya’s character is closely associated with Karuppusamy, a guardian deity worshipped widely across southern Tamil Nadu, the trailer strongly suggests that he may be the deity himself in human form. “I’d been away just for a while… and you dare to forget who I am?” Suriya says in one of the trailer’s most striking moments. In another scene, Suriya responds to the villain’s claim that “even if God comes down, court procedures can’t be changed” with a swag heavy “Well, here I am.”

The premise recalls RJ Balaji’s Mookuthi Amman, in which a goddess took human form to intervene in the lives of ordinary people. If Karuppu is indeed following a similar template, the target this time appears to be the legal system. An early frame identifies the Seven Wells Family Court in Chennai, hinting that delayed civil cases and denied justice may drive the story.

RJ Balaji plays Baby Kannan

RJ Balaji appears in a markedly different avatar as Baby Kannan, with the trailer presenting him as a polished and potentially ruthless antagonist. His suit bears the initials “BK,” while his car’s registration number, TN12 BK 2085, seems to reference RJ Balaji’s birth date, June 20, 1985.

Swasika appears to be part of Baby Kannan’s circle, while Anagha Maya Ravi, Sshivada and Indrans seem to play key roles in the events that set the story in motion. One sequence shows Indrans’ character facing repeated delays in court and apparent humiliation, prompting him to pray to Karuppusamy. As hinted in the teaser, those who sincerely seek the deity’s intervention by grinding red chillies may receive swift justice.

The trailer also includes a sly nod to RJ Balaji’s past as a cricket commentator. In one scene, Suriya’s character asks Baby Kannan whether he plans to take up commentary, before adding, “But for that you’d actually need to know the game.”

Cast and release

Sai Abhyankkar has composed the music for Karuppu. The technical crew includes cinematographer GK Vishnu, editor R Kalaivanan, production designer Arun Venjaramoodu, and stunt choreographers Anbariv and Vikram Mor.

The film also stars Trisha, Supreeth Reddy, Yogi Babu, Mansoor Ali Khan, George Maryan, Aadukalam Naren, Namo Narayana, Deepa Shankar, Lollu Sabha Maaran and Jaffer Sadiq.

Produced by SR Prakash Babu and SR Prabhu under the Dream Warrior Pictures banner, with Aravendaraj Baskaran as executive producer, Karuppu is set to release in theatres on May 14.
