Mammootty-Mohanlalâs Patriot Release Postponed New Date to Be Announced Soon

The much-anticipated Malayalam multi-starrer Patriot, headlined by Mammootty and Mohanlal, has officially been postponed from its originally scheduled April 23 release. The announcement, made by producer Anto Joseph on social media, has sparked both disappointment and intrigue among fans eagerly awaiting the rare on-screen collaboration of the two legends.

A strategic delay for a big-ticket spectacle

Taking to his social media handle on Tuesday, Anto Joseph shared an update explaining the decision. “We are striving to bring Patriot to you in the best possible quality. However, it has become imperative to push it by a few days from the earlier planned April 23 due to the pressure of unforeseen circumstances. Our beloved Mammookka and Lalettan will announce the new release date through their social media pages at 6 pm tomorrow. Expecting your continued love and support.”

While the exact nature of the delay remains undisclosed, such last-minute shifts are often linked to post-production refinements, censor processes, or distribution logistics, especially for a film mounted on this scale. With expectations riding high, the makers appear keen to ensure that Patriot meets both technical and narrative benchmarks before hitting theatres.

Star power meets a high-stakes spy narrative

Billed as a gripping spy thriller, Patriot boasts an ensemble cast that extends well beyond its iconic leads. Fahadh Faasil takes on the role of the antagonist, setting up what promises to be a compelling face-off against Mammootty and Mohanlal. The film also features Nayanthara, Kunchacko Boban, Darshana Rajendran, Revathy, and Grace Antony, among others, forming a robust supporting lineup.

With such a diverse cast, the film is expected to blend star-driven spectacle with layered storytelling. Industry insiders suggest that Patriot leans into the espionage genre with a mix of action, political intrigue, and emotional drama, positioning it as one of Malayalam cinema’s most ambitious projects in recent times.

The production is backed by Anto Joseph alongside KG Anil Kumar, with CR Salim and Subhash Manuel serving as co-producers. The scale of the film, combined with its genre and cast, signals a pan-Indian appeal, potentially expanding its reach beyond traditional markets.

Adding to its growing buzz, Patriot has already secured a prestigious international platform. The film has been selected to open the Indian Film Festival of Los Angeles, which is set to commence on April 23. This early showcase underscores the film’s global ambitions and its potential to resonate with audiences beyond India.

Interestingly, the postponement does not appear to affect its festival premiere, suggesting that the theatrical delay is a strategic move rather than a setback. If anything, the international spotlight could further amplify anticipation ahead of its eventual release.

What lies ahead

With the new release date set to be unveiled by Mammootty and Mohanlal themselves, fans can expect a carefully orchestrated announcement that keeps the excitement intact. The pairing of the two stalwarts, combined with Fahadh Faasil’s formidable presence and a strong ensemble, makes Patriot one of the most awaited releases of the year.

For now, the delay may test patience, but if the makers deliver on their promise of enhanced quality, the wait could well be worth it.

Malayalam Director Ranjith Balakrishnan Remanded To Judicial Custody In Sexual Harassment Case

Malayalam Director Ranjith Balakrishnan Remanded To Judicial Custody In Sexual Harassment Case

Malayalam filmmaker Ranjith Balakrishnan has been remanded to 14 days in judicial custody in connection with a sexual harassment case, marking a significant escalation in a controversy that has been building over the past few days. After completing medical formalities, he has been lodged in the Ernakulam sub jail, following his production before a magistrate in Thrippunithura.

Arrest, Custody And Denial

Prior to the court proceedings, Ranjith had been admitted to Ernakulam General Hospital citing health concerns. His hospitalisation briefly delayed procedural formalities, but he was eventually discharged and presented before the court. Addressing the media in a brief interaction, the director dismissed the accusations, stating that the case would eventually be proven false.

His bail application is expected to be taken up by the court, with further legal developments likely in the coming days.

The filmmaker’s arrest took place on Tuesday night near Muttam in Idukki district, where police intercepted the vehicle he was travelling in. According to officials, the move followed intelligence inputs suggesting that he might attempt to evade arrest. He was first taken to the Thodupuzha police station before being transferred to Kochi City Police. The arrest was formally recorded at the North Women’s Police Station.

The case has been registered under multiple provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including charges related to sexual assault, outraging the modesty of a woman, wrongful confinement and making obscene gestures. The investigation is currently being overseen by Ernakulam City Deputy Commissioner of Police Aswathy Jiji.

Complaint, Investigation And Industry Fallout

The case stems from a complaint filed by a woman actor who is part of Ranjith’s ongoing film project. In her statement, she alleged that an incident occurred on January 28 at a shooting location in Fort Kochi. According to her account, the director entered her caravan without permission, physically restrained her and attempted to kiss her. She stated that he withdrew only after she resisted.

In a separate version of events cited in the complaint, the actor alleged that she had been called into the caravan under the pretext of discussing a more prominent role before the alleged assault took place. She managed to exit the space and later informed her colleagues about what had happened.

Her confidential statement was recorded earlier this week at the Women’s Police Station, following which authorities moved swiftly. Police sources indicated that a preliminary inquiry found sufficient grounds to proceed, prompting immediate action. Officials also maintained that the proceedings were conducted discreetly to protect the complainant’s identity and privacy.

Investigators are now expected to gather additional evidence and record further statements as part of the ongoing probe.

This is not the first time Ranjith has faced allegations of this nature. In 2024, a Bengali actor accused him of inappropriate conduct during an audition for the 2009 film Paleri Manikyam: Oru Pathirakolapathakathinte Katha. That complaint resulted in a case being registered and led to his resignation as chairman of the Kerala State Chalachithra Academy. Another complaint had also surfaced earlier from a youth alleging sexual abuse.

The latest developments have triggered a response from within the Malayalam film industry. The Film Employees Federation of Kerala has distanced itself from the filmmaker following his arrest. General Secretary B Unnikrishnan stated that the organisation would adhere to its established protocol in such cases.

“If a person involved in a sexual assault case is a FEFKA member, the procedure is to keep them away until the case is resolved. This directive has been communicated to the Directors’ Union and the Writers’ Union, which will convene online and take a formal decision,” he said.

He also clarified that the Internal Complaints Committee associated with the film currently being directed by Ranjith has not received any complaint regarding the latest allegation.

The unfolding case has once again brought conversations around workplace safety, accountability and institutional response in the film industry into sharp focus. While the legal process is underway, all eyes are now on the court’s decision regarding Ranjith’s bail plea and the direction the investigation will take in the coming weeks.
