Priyanka Chopra Jonas Talks About Nick Jonasâ Diabetes Battle And The Need For Awareness In India

Priyanka Chopra Jonas, who is currently busy filming her upcoming project Varanasi, recently took a moment to advocate for a cause close to her heart: diabetes awareness. In a candid new interview, she talked about her personal journey as a spouse to someone living with Type 1 diabetes and expressed her concerns about the lack of knowledge about the condition in India. Nick Jonas was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes years ago. While the couple is often seen as a picture of strength, Priyanka revealed that the early days of their marriage were filled with anxieties. Recalling the period shortly after they wed, she shared just how much the diagnosis affected her mind. She admitted, “I used to wake up in the middle of the night sometimes, just to see if he was breathing,” highlighting the constant vigilance that often comes with supporting a loved one with the condition.

Priyanka recently featured on a National Geographic list of celebrities who use their platforms to tackle health stigmas and promote early detection. During the discussion, Priyanka pointed out an irony about health in her home country. She mentioned that while India has the highest number of diabetes cases globally, awareness is really low. Despite her early fears, Priyanka’s message today is one of hope and empowerment. She urged people not to let a diagnosis overwhelm them. She mentioned, “Don’t be afraid of the diagnosis… You can handle and live with this condition – and actually thrive with it.”

Her commitment to the cause goes beyond words. Priyanka has been actively involved with a nonprofit co-founded by Nick Jonas, which has launched awareness campaigns in India. These initiatives focus on the importance of early diagnosis and have even reached global stages, including the United Nations General Assembly. On the work front, her debut Hollywood production, The Bluff released in theatres, and has been a prominent figure at major international fashion events and pre-Oscar parties. She will next be seen in Varanasi, directed by SS Rajamouli. The filming is reportedly set to move to Antarctica to film at the Ross Glacier, with a planned release for 2027.

Actor R Parthiban Apologizes for Caste Remarks at Ustaad Bhagat Singh Event

Days after mentioning his caste identity at the pre-release event of the Pawan Kalyan-starrer Ustaad Bhagat Singh, prominent South Indian actor R Parthiban issued an apology for what he termed a ‘slip of the tongue.’ He clarified his stance, stating a “dislike for those who celebrate caste as a badge of honour.” He further wrote, “I give you my word that this will never happen again, even by mistake. Once more, I offer my heartfelt apologies to everyone who was hurt by my words. Please put this behind you and continue to encourage me as you always have.”

Controversy brewed

Parthiban, who portrays a villainous politician in the Ugadi release, mentioned his caste background, ostensibly to highlight his Telugu ethnic heritage. He also intended to convey that his social background aligns with that of the film’s hero, Pawan Kalyan (who also serves as the Deputy Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh). While his remarks did not provoke significant reaction in the Telugu States, a considerable controversy quickly emerged in Tamil Nadu.

The Season of Apologies

In recent months alone, at least four to five movie celebrities have found themselves issuing apologies for their public statements. Bollywood actor Ranveer Singh, for instance, apologized for his mimicry of Rishab Shetty in Kantara, facing threats of police complaints. Veteran Telugu actor Rajendra Prasad, while praising a yesteryear Telugu matinee idol, inadvertently “insulted” the legendary Tamil cinema icon, MG Ramachandran. Following objections from a section of the Tamil film industry, Rajendra Prasad expressed his sincere regret. In Telugu cinema, speeches that draw criticism are increasingly becoming commonplace. Sivaji, a prominent character artist and antagonist, was summoned by the Telangana State Women Commission for making objectionable remarks about the attire of actresses at events. R Parthiban himself previously courted controversy after making remarks about Trisha Krishnan at an awards function. After the actress herself flagged the unwarranted remarks, the senior actor duly apologized.
