The censor-related turbulence surrounding Vijay’s Jana Nayagan and Sivakarthikeyan’s Parasakthi has triggered one of the strongest public interventions yet from within the Tamil film industry. Actor-politician Kamal Haasan took to his social media platforms with a sharply worded statement that reframed the crisis as not merely an industry dispute but a constitutional concern.
Sharing a note titled For Art, For Artists, For the Constitution, Kamal Haasan stressed that the freedom of expression guaranteed by the Constitution of India is guided by reason and must never be weakened by opaque systems. “This moment is larger than any one film; it reflects the space we accord art and artists in a constitutional democracy,” he wrote, underlining that cinema is a collective enterprise sustained by writers, technicians, performers, exhibitors and a network of small businesses.
His words come at a time when the certification process for two major Tamil releases has been marred by uncertainty, court interventions and growing frustration within the industry.
A call for transparency and timelines
Kamal Haasan’s note goes beyond moral support. It reads like a blueprint for reform. He described how the absence of clarity has a domino effect across the industry. “When clarity is absent, creativity is constrained, economic activity is disrupted, and public trust is weakened. Tamil Nadu and India’s cinema lovers bring passion, discernment, and maturity to the arts,” he wrote, adding that audiences deserve openness and respect from institutions.
He called for a relook at the certification framework itself, demanding “defined timelines, transparent evaluation processes, and written, reasoned justifications for every suggested cut or edit.” The emphasis on written explanations is particularly telling, as filmmakers often complain that vague verbal instructions leave them with no clarity on what exactly needs to be changed and why.
“This is also a moment for the entire film industry to unite and engage in meaningful, constructive dialogue with our government institutions,” he added, urging stakeholders to turn the present impasse into a catalyst for long-term reform.
For Kamal Haasan, these measures are not just about safeguarding creative freedom. He said they are vital to uphold constitutional values and reinforce democratic institutions by restoring trust between artists, authorities and audiences.
Industry voices rally behind Jana Nayagan
The intervention from Kamal Haasan follows a wave of reactions from across the film fraternity. Filmmaker Pa Ranjith also voiced his concern over social media, stating, “What has happened to Jana Nayagan shows that the censor board has fallen into misleading and improper guidance. Moreover, such a regressive approach, where efforts are made aggressively to suppress dissenting or alternative voices, must be strongly condemned.” He also spoke of facing similar pressures during the release of several of his own films, lending weight to the argument that the issue is systemic.
Jana Nayagan, which has been grappling with certification hurdles since December 2025, was initially slated for a January 9 release. The uncertainty around its clearance pushed the film off its original date, triggering widespread solidarity from actors and directors including Silambarasan, Ravi Mohan, Jiiva and Karthik Subbaraj, all of whom publicly expressed support for Vijay and the film’s team.
The legal drama has further intensified the situation. After a hearing before the Chief Justice of the Madras High Court on Friday following an appeal by the CBFC, the court stayed the earlier single judge order by Justice PT Asha that had granted the film a U/A 16+ certificate. The next hearing for the writ appeal is scheduled for January 20, leaving the fate of the film hanging in the balance.
Parasakthi, directed by Sudha Kongara, faced similar turbulence. The film eventually secured a U/A certificate from the CBFC on Friday and released the following day. However, the clearance reportedly came with multiple modifications, including the muting and replacement of several words across different scenes, which once again fuelled debate on the extent of intervention by the censor board.
Together, the episodes surrounding Jana Nayagan and Parasakthi have exposed fault lines in the current certification system. What was once seen as a procedural step is now being questioned as a process that can disrupt livelihoods, stall major releases and dampen creative morale.
Kamal Haasan’s statement has therefore arrived at a crucial juncture. By invoking the Constitution and calling for accountability rather than confrontation, he has shifted the conversation from grievance to governance. Whether the institutions concerned respond with the openness, he seeks remains to be seen. But for now, his words have given the industry a unifying rallying point in a moment of rare collective unease.
