In a significant ruling, the Bombay High Court overturned the death sentences of five men convicted in the 2006 Mumbai train bombings. The court acquitted all twelve accused who were previously convicted by the special trial court in September 2015. Justices Anil Kilor and Shyam Chandak of the special bench quashed and set aside the trial court’s verdict.
A massive fraud has been uncovered in Maharashtra’s education system, involving the misuse of the Shalarth portal. Senior education officers allegedly created fake teacher IDs and hired unqualified individuals for bribes, siphoning off an estimated Rs 2,000-3,000 crore. A Special Investigation Team has been formed to probe the scam, with arrests and suspensions already underway.
